“She brings reports nearly everyday, she doesn’t like to be looked at and she has short temper. Whoever looks at her leg for a long time, she get’s angry and reacts,” reports Josephine, Ireen's mother.

Irene has a disability, which has planted a seed of anger in her. She feels uncomfortable when people stare at her, especially at her leg. Even when we were taking photos of her, we had to try several times to convince her that she is beautiful and looks beautiful by showing her the photos. She eventually relaxed, eased up and shared a smile. It will be so exciting to show her after healing is complete as to how far she has come!

Josephine narrated that Irene was injured when she was one year old, “When she was sleeping, the bedroom wall collapsed and fell on her, which badly injured her legs. At the hospital they applied bandages when she was still swollen and then a reaction made the skin turn like she got burned. Deep wounds developed to an extent that even the bone on the leg was showing. They had to do an operation to remove the flesh from the thighs to patch up the wounds on the leg. Due to the deepness of the wounds, we spent almost a year in the hospital.”

Irene has grown up with bitterness coupled with anger, which makes her violent sometimes. “There was a time she went to the village to stay with the grandparents, they sent her back because she used to beat her cousins in the village when they laughed at her, it continued for some time until they sent her back because of her violent behavior,” recounted Josephine.

This eleven year old, has what's called a severe left equinus, a downward bending of the foot which was difficult to treat at an early age because of the deep wounds on her leg that took so long to heal.

Her mother a laments about how difficult it has been for them, sharing moments when she gave up and moments when God intervened for Ireen’s situation. “There was a time I walked out of the hospital because the bone was outside and they were not giving her any medication, I gave up. When I went home, people at home encouraged me to go back and that’s how I went back.” Excitingly, she shares how God has been there for them and we also believe that He is working in their lives! “When I took her to the hospital immediately after the accident, she was not eating and not even moving for a month. I used to say, 'may God do what he wants to her', then God brought her back to life. Because of this experience, even now when I want to do something wrong, I think what God did to her and I change my mind.”

Ireen is in grade three and the third born in the family of five. She complains of pain in her leg when she walks long distances. There is a Catholic nun who identified her and has been giving them practical help, especially with nutrition because Josephine's supply is inadequate. Her sponsor knew about CURE Zambia and arrangements were made for her to get a referral to CURE for specialized treatment on her left leg.

We are excited that they are here and that our treatment approach does not only concentrate on her physical healing, but we equally attach great importance to spiritual and emotional healing. We believe that by the time Ireen will be walking out of our doors, she will understand that she is made in God’s image and beautiful beyond measure. We are also happy that Josephine shared this at the end of our discussion, “I am thankful to how the people here have been helpful and keeping us in a clean environment, mostly importantly everywhere we go we are feeling the presence of God.”

We invite you to join in being a part of Ireen's healing through your prayers and support!
