Baby Blessing is the youngest of 4 children, and her family lives in Northern Uganda. Her father has his own small business as a butcher, and her mother, Juliet is a farmer. Blessing had a brain infection that has caused inflammation of the ventricles in her brain; this condition is called ventriculitis. Thankfully, the doctors at the main hospital near her house are familiar with CURE Uganda, because we hold a mobile clinic there, and they were able to refer Juliet and Blessing to us.
Blessing had an irrigation procedure at CURE Uganda when she was about 6 weeks old to help treat her infection, and then another neurosurgery 5 weeks later to help her cerebrospinal fluid flow more freely. Unfortunately she recently started vomiting and had a fever and cough, so Juliet brought her back to see the medical team. Now she's being checked on daily by the doctors and nurses while waiting for surgery number 3 to help deal with the infection in her brain.
Three neurosurgeries in about 4 months is a lot for a little baby! Her mom, Juliet is a born-again Christian, and we're thankful that she has access to lots of good spiritual encouragement, counseling and care while she is here at CURE Uganda. Our pastors meet with each patient and parent every day, and host worship on the ward each afternoon. We're praying that Juliet and Blessing would feel loved and cared for while they are with us at CURE Uganda!
Baby Blessing is heading home! She's recovered so well from her shunt operation and is doing great! She and Juliet began their long journey home this morning after the doctors and nurses made sure they had were all set. We'll see them again in a few weeks for Blessing's next checkup!
"...there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother" - Proverbs 18:24. There is something so special about finding a new friend! Juliet was eager to take a photo this afternoon with her new friend at CURE Uganda, who is from the same city she is! They also speak the same language so can really encourage each other. Baby Blessing is recovering well from surgery, and getting lots of sleep, and hopefully she and Juliet will be able to head home very soon.
Baby Blessing had her surgery today! Because she had some fluid pressing down on the outside of her brain, Dr. Okechi installed a shunt to help drain that fluid down into the area around her stomach. It sounds complicated, but the CURE Uganda neurosurgeons do some pretty incredible surgeries every day! Once this extra fluid on top of her brain is drained, Blessing will later have another surgery to help treat her hydrocephalus. Her surgery today went well, and after recovering in the post-anesthesia unit, she was moved to the ICU where Juliet can stay right nearby!
Juliet has been missing her three other children at home - it's hard to be in the hospital and missing your family! We asked her this afternoon how Blessing was doing, and she said "my baby is hurting". The medical team is making sure baby Blessing is getting the best possible care, but she is still quite ill and of course that is hard for her mom to see. We are praying for comfort and encouragement for Juliet and baby Blessing!
This afternoon we found Juliet enjoying some time outside with a few of the other CURE Uganda moms! Baby Blessing was sleeping, so we didn't want to wake her up, but the moms were excited to have their photo taken. Ugandans often don't smile while a photo is being taken, but the moms were definitely all smiles right after this! Blessing is doing well and she and Juliet are resting and awaiting her surgery date. Thank you for praying for them today!
Juliet and Blessing are having a nice peaceful day together! This morning they spent some time chatting with Oliver, who is the mom of Pretty, another one of our CUREkids! They are from the same area and speak the same language, which is such a nice encouragement. Juliet let us know that her husband has been really supportive of her and baby Blessing. Later, Nurse Martha checked on Blessing to be sure she didn't have a fever and was breathing well. Then, time for afternoon worship on the ward! A pretty good day as Blessing awaits her surgery - hopefully it'll be later this week!
