Little Christine is Judith's firstborn child, and they came to CURE Uganda just last week. Judith had an uneventful pregnancy, but a few weeks after Christine was born she noticed that Christine's head was starting to increase in size. Thankfully, someone at their local hospital knew about us here at CURE Uganda and was able to refer them here!
The medical team did an evaluation and determined that Christine has post-infectious hydrocephalus. This means that she had an infection which traveled to her brain and stopped the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Normally, CSF travels from the brain down the spinal cord, but in children with hydrocephalus this pathway is blocked. This causes a build-up of fluid on the brain, which leads to a child's head swelling and will cause death if it's not treated.
In Christine's case, because her mom brought her to CURE Uganda, she'll be able to get the surgery she needs to treat her hydrocephalus and help her CSF get moving again! We have an entire medical team, plus social workers and spiritual counselors who are ready to love, pray for and provide world-class medical care for Christine. Thank you for being part of the group of people that are caring for her and her family.
Christine was discharged this morning and she and Judith are heading home! We'll see them again in a few weeks at a mobile clinic near their home. They have a long journey ahead of them, so please be praying for safe travels and continued healing for baby Christine!
"God is hearing; God is faithful!" As Christine and Judith attended afternoon worship on the ward today, one of our lab scientists shared a powerful message about the importance of prayer. He shared in English, and Pastor Winnie translated to one of the local languages. We're thankful that CURE Uganda staff from many different departments take time to share their testimonies and truth with our patients and their families! Christine is doing well and continuing to recover from her surgery to treat her hydrocephalus. Hopefully she and mama Judith will be able to head home soon!
Christine had her surgery today! Neurosurgeon Dr. Wegoye, along with the OR team, performed an ETV/CPC surgery, which was actually developed right here at CURE Uganda. This procedure creates a new pathway for the cerebrospinal fluid to flow from the baby's brain, and also helps their brain from producing too much fluid. It's a special way to treat hydrocephalus without a shunt and the surgeons at CURE Uganda are some of the best in the world at this surgery! Christine's surgery went smoothly, and she is resting now in the ICU with Judith as she recovers.
Judith got some good news about baby Christine today! The doctors and anesthesiologists have cleared Christine for surgery, and she is on the schedule for tomorrow. We're so thankful that she'll be able to have the surgery she needs to treat her hydrocephalus. Thank you for the lovely get-well messages for her and for praying for her as she has surgery tomorrow!
Christine and Judith had a quiet weekend, and Christine is holding steady while she waits for her surgery! This afternoon they attended worship on the ward together, and Christine peaked over mama Judith's shoulder. Christine is ready for surgery, and should be able to head to the operating room later this week. It can be tough to wait for surgery, so thank you for praying for them both while they continue to wait!
How sweet are baby Christine's little hands? With dimples! She's definitely a fan of chewing on her fingers! She and mama Judith had a pretty quiet day, and are continuing to stay in the patient hostel while they wait for surgery next week. We're praying that they have a good weekend and continue to make friends at CURE Uganda while they wait for Christine's operation!
Christine and her mom Judith are getting settled into CURE Uganda! Yesterday they attended afternoon worship on the ward together. The pastors on staff take turns leading worship and teaching every weekday afternoon, which is a great time of encouragement for all the patients and families. Christine is feeling pretty sleepy today, and is waiting for surgery. We're praying that she and Judith would feel welcomed and cared for as they adjust to CURE and wait for Christine's surgery!
