Patrick is a newborn with spina bifida, which is a birth defect where the baby's spine and spinal cord does not form properly. In Patrick's case, he has myelomeningocele, which means that his spinal nerves push out through an opening between the vertebrae of his back. It's a complicated condition, but thankfully the neurosurgeons at CURE Uganda are highly experienced and skilled in treating it.
Patrick is the youngest of 5 children, and his father is a teacher while Lydia manages the household. They live only a few hours away from CURE Uganda and were able to come quickly once their local hospital referred them to us. We're thankful they found out about CURE and that Patrick can receive the surgery and care he needs!
Patrick and Lydia are headed home! We caught them this morning getting prepared to leave, and Patrick was feeling very hungry as you can see! Lydia stopped to feed him before they began their journey home. He'll be getting his stitches out at a clinic, near their home, next week. Then, they will see the CURE Uganda doctors again, in January, at one of our mobile clinics. The mobile clinics provide a wonderful chance for families to receive care and attend checkup appointments at a location closer to their homes. Thank you for praying for Patrick!
Patrick had his surgery! On Friday, Dr. Onen, one of CURE Uganda's neurosurgeons, operated to treat his spina bifida and close the opening on his back. The surgery went well, and after recovering in the ICU with Lydia nearby, he is now back in the main ward. The neurosurgeons and doctors visited Patrick today during morning rounds and are continuing to keep a close eye on him as he recovers. Thank you for continuing to pray for this sweet little guy!
Patrick is having surgery today! This morning, Dr. Emmanuel stopped by during morning rounds to talk with Lydia and be sure that she understands what will happen during the surgery. Since today is Thanksgiving in America, we're extra thankful that Patrick gets to have the surgery he needs to help heal his spina bifida!
How sweet are Patrick's little curls! He's just 4 days old and is spending lots of time cuddling with mama Lydia while they get settled into CURE Uganda. The doctors checked on him this morning, during their rounds, and let Lydia know that he should have surgery in a few days. We let Lydia know that people will be praying for her and Patrick. Thank you for being on their team!
