Baby Ebenezer is almost 3 months old, and she was referred to CURE Uganda after her family brought her to a health camp, run by an organization that we partner with called Bulamu Healthcare. We're so thankful for the other organizations in Uganda and neighboring countries that we're able to work with. We are definitely stronger together!
Little Ebenezer was born at home. She both cried and breastfed right away which are good signs. However, at 5 days old she developed a high fever, and was very irritable. After receiving an IV at a hospital, she seemed better but then her head started to increase in size. She has hydrocephalus, which means the cerebrospinal fluid in her brain is building up and causing her head to grow too quickly. This is a serious condition that can lead to significant damage, and if not treated, death.
Ebenezer's mom is a Christian, and she chose a powerful name for her little girl! Her name means "rock, or stone of help", and it comes from the Bible. It references when Samuel set up a stone to help remember a specific time when God helped his people defeat their enemies. We know that Jesus is the true Ebenezer, and He is the true Rock, who already has defeated our ultimate enemy, death, by dying for us! We are praying that little Ebenezer would come to know Jesus and His great love for her. Please join us in praying for her and her family!
Early this morning, Ebenezer and mama Charity headed for home! They have a very long bus journey ahead of them, so please be praying for traveling mercies for them! Ebenezer will get her stitches out soon at their local health clinic, and we're hoping to see her next month for her checkup. Thank you for continuing to pray for this sweet little girl and her family!
Ebenezer did indeed have her surgery yesterday! Neurosurgeon Dr. Wegoye was able to help the fluid in her brain flow more freely by using a flexible endoscope. The scope has a small camera attached to it, so the surgeons can see what is happening inside a patient's brain on the monitor at the foot of the operating table. It's pretty amazing! Ebenezer is recovering well and after a night in the ICU is back in the main ward with Charity. Thank you for praying for her!
Ebenezer was awake and alert this morning! She is heading to the OR this afternoon for surgery, which will help to treat her hydrocephalus. Thank you for praying for her and mama Charity as they look forward to surgery. We know the neurosurgeons and OR team will do an amazing job; not only will Ebenezer get the surgery she needs, but the OR team stops and prays for each patient before they begin their operation!
Today brought some wonderful news - Ebenezer's cerebrospinal fluid is free of infection and she is cleared for surgery! Nurse Caren told us that hopefully Ebenezer will be able to have surgery either tomorrow or Friday. Charity has been doing such a wonderful job taking care of Ebenezer. They had a pretty quiet day today and attended worship on the ward this afternoon with the other moms and babies. Thank you for praying for them!
Ebenezer is getting a 'tap' today, where the CURE Uganda doctors will remove a small amount of her cerebrospinal fluid to see if she still has infection remaining in her brain. Hopefully, the infection will be gone so that she can be cleared for surgery - we'll keep you posted! Thank you for continuing to pray for Ebenezer and her mama Charity while they wait for the results of this test.
Today Ebenezer is pretty sleepy! She's continuing to rest on the main ward while she receives daily antibiotics to tackle the infection in her brain. Charity is in good spirits, and although their friends Grace and Nickson have headed home, there is another family in their section of the ward that speaks their language. It's always good to make new friends! We're continuing to pray that God would heal 100% of the infection in little Ebenezer's brain so that she can get the full surgery she needs for her hydrocephalus.
Ebenezer is continuing receiving treatment to tackle her infection! Her mom, Charity, is doing a wonderful job taking care of her. In addition to the medicine for the infection, Ebenzer is also getting some baby tylenol and anti-seizure medication. Children with hydrocephalus can be prone to seizures, so the CURE Uganda nurses, doctors, and surgeons do a great job of being sure they get the medicine they need for that, too. We're so thankful that Ebenezer can receive the care she needs here at CURE, and that she has such a wonderful mom!
Little Ebenezer had a whole bunch of people checking on her this morning! The doctors, and neurosurgeons check on each baby every morning, and it can be quite a big group! Medical Director Dr. Emmanuel advised that Ebenezer needs to stay at CURE Uganda a bit longer so that she can receive the IV antibiotics that she needs to fight this nasty infection. Would you pray with us that all her infection would be healed so that she can be ready for surgery?
Ebenezer and Charity are back! On Monday, baby Ebenezer had her second surgical procedure, another irrigation or 'washout'. Because she is still fighting infection in her brain, the surgeons use clean fluid to help wash out the infection. She's recovering well in the main ward, and is right next to her little buddy, Nickson, and his mom, Grace. Please join us in praying that the washout and medication would be effective in tackling this infection, so that little Ebenezer can have the full surgery she needs to treat her hydrocephalus!
Ebenezer and Charity are heading home! Dr. Emmanuel checked on Ebenezer this morning and said that she could go home, but she needs to come back in about a month for a review. Hopefully she'll be able to have the full surgery she needs at that time! Thank you for the sweet get-well messages of encouragement for this little one. We're continuing to pray that God would heal her of infection while she is at home so she'll be ready for surgery soon.
Ebenezer has had her surgery! She had what is known as an irrigation, or 'washout' procedure, where the surgeons flush clean fluid through parts of her brain in order to help decrease the level of infection that is attacking her brain. In order to have the full surgery that she needs, Ebenezer's infection needs to be healed, so please join with us in praying for her and that her infection will clear up.
Ebenezer and mama Charity joined in ward worship this afternoon - sitting right in the front row! They ended up sitting in front of Precious, who is another one of our CURE kids this week, and her mama. We're thankful for the sense of community that is created at CURE Uganda as we sing and worship and learn about God together - it's a good reminder that we're not on this journey of life alone. Hopefully both Ebenezer and Precious can have their surgeries soon - another step on their journeys of healing!
