Little Charles is the youngest child in his family and came to CURE Uganda just two days after he was born! His parents, Caroline and Charles, are farmers and live a few hours away from CURE Uganda.

Charles has three older siblings at home who are all healthy, so it was quite a surprise when he was born with a swelling on his nose. He has a nasal encephlalocele, which is a birth defect where part of the brain pushes out through an opening in the skull. This is a fairly rare condition, but the neurosurgeons at CURE Uganda are experienced and skilled in performing the type of neurosurgery needed to treat it. We are thankful that his family was able to bring him to CURE Uganda to have surgery while he's very young. This helps with his treatment.

Because it can feel very overwhelming to have a baby with this condition, we encouraged Caroline that the neurosurgeons at CURE have treated babies with this problem before. We also let her know that we would be praying for healing for Charles! We know that God loves him and cares about what's happening to him. Thank you for being part of the global team that is praying for this sweet little one and his family.

Charles and Caroline have headed home! The neurosurgeons decided that it would be best if he was a bit older and bigger before he has the surgery he needs to treat his encephlalocele. So, Caroline took him home on Friday, and they'll be back in a few months for his surgery. He's been doing a great job breastfeeding, and we're hoping he'll be healthy and much bigger next time we see him. Please pray for Charles and his family while they wait.

Little Charles is such a sweet baby! Nurse Ruth helped with translation today and let Caroline know that people are praying for her and Charles. Caroline asked if we can continue to pray for his healing, and we promised we would do just that. Charles should be having surgery either tomorrow or next week and is doing a great job of breastfeeding. He looks a bit bigger already! Since Caroline doesn't have a phone, Ruth was able to encourage her that she can use the phone in the main ward to get in touch with her family. The CURE Uganda nurses do an amazing job of loving all the moms and babies, and Ruth is a wonderful example of that. She's smart, feisty, loving, and has a great sense of humor. We are so thankful for her! Photo of Charles

Charles was having a cuddly morning today! The doctors and surgeons checked on him and Caroline during their morning rounds, and the nurses are keeping an eye on him as he waits for his surgery date. There are a lot of babies waiting for surgery, and it can be difficult to determine the order of the surgeries for all the babies. We're thankful that Charles has a whole medical team watching over him while he waits! Photo of Charles

The CURE Uganda nurses are amazing! Today, nurse Dan spoke with Mama Caroline to let her know that people around the world would be praying for her and baby Charles. Because the families who come to CURE Uganda speak many different languages, the nurses frequently act as translators. Charles is doing well and resting with Caroline while he awaits his surgery. The doctors and neurosurgeons will review all of his CT scan and blood test results to be sure he's ready for surgery, and hopefully, he can have his operation later this week! Photo of Charles
