When Catherine was pregnant with Godson, she followed all the medical instruction given to her. She attended all her doctor’s visits and even had two ultrasounds, a rarity in Uganda. All indications pointed to both her and the baby being healthy. When she was seven months pregnant however she went for her last antenatal visit and when she had her third ultrasound scan, she was told that her baby’s head was bigger than normal, a sign of a dangerous condition called hydrocephalus which, if untreated, can leave a child with brain damage, blindness, and even death. “It was one of the most difficult times in my life because I was very shocked and worried. I wondered why it happened when I was just about to give birth”, Catherine says. She was very sad and says she cried every night. She is a member of a prayer group at her church and says that it is prayer that helped her make it through the last few months before birth. The hospital she gave birth in is 200 kilometers from her home and she wasn’t accompanied by her husband as he had to take care of their two other children. Thankfully, a woman from her prayer group was there to accompany her. Catherine gave birth via c-section and baby Godson was immediately referred here to CURE Uganda. Catherine told us that her husband still hasn’t seen Godfrey since Godfrey was born only 13 days ago and they came here directly from the referring hospital. While mama Catherine is still afraid, we are thankful she has made it here to us where Godfrey will get the treatment he needs to deal with his hydrocephalus saving his life and allowing him to go home and meet the rest of his family!
Godson’s mom called us and let us know she couldn’t make it for the mobile clinic as she is in the hospital for a little bit. She assured us she's fine and Godson is doing well. She promised that she will bring him for our next CURE Uganda mobile clinic near their home. Please be praying for mama Godson as she gets better!
Godson is heading home today! The doctors and surgeons checked on him this morning during rounds and said he could go home. Mama Catherine is very excited! Clinical officer Joshua checked on his dressing, and prescribed some medication and dressing materials that they can take home with them. Because they live in on the other side of Uganda, we'll see them again for a checkup at our mobile clinic near their home in October. Thank you for praying for them as they start their long journey home today!
We found out this morning that little Godson has malaria, which explains why he was feeling so badly! The doctors are giving him medicine, and he seems a bit better already. One of our pastors, Simon Peter, gave mama Catherine some spiritual tracts this morning, in both English and Luganda, which she was glad to receive. We're thankful she'll have some good things to read and learn more about Jesus while she's waiting for Godson to recover!
We were hoping that Godson and mama Catherine could head home today, but unfortunately he hasn't been feeling so well! He has a fever, has been irritable, and hasn't been breastfeeding well. The doctors ordered some blood tests to be done so we can figure out what's going on! Dr. Emmanuel checked on Godson this morning during morning rounds, and Dr. Noah had a long chat with Catherine about her concerns as well. We're so thankful that we have such loving and caring doctors at CURE Uganda who care for both our babies and mamas!
“Early this morning Godson went in for an ETV/CPC surgery to take care of his hydrocephalus. The procedure was performed by Dr. Jo Ling. Godson’s mother told us that she had been very worried while he was in surgery but was relieved when she heard the surgery was a success. Please pray that he has a stable night in ICU and that he'll be discharged back to the ward shortly!
We have some good news! Godson had a calm night and hasn’t been irritable. Catherine called home and was told that one of her younger children is down with malaria so we also have to remember Godson’s siblings in prayer too.
Please be praying for Godson as he gets settled here at CURE Uganda. His hydrocephalus has made him very uncomfortable and he is alway crying which wears on his mother both physically and emotionally. With this said, Mama Catherine says he seems to be crying less now that they've arrived here which is a good sign!
