CURE in Uganda

The picture above is of CURE in Uganda. Everyone who serves with CURE in Uganda, from medical professionals to office staff, are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical and spiritual care to people who, without CURE, couldn't find it and couldn't afford it, just like Calvin. To do that, we're inviting you to partner with us.

We need to raise approximately $1000 to treat children like Calvin. When you give a gift through Calvin's CUREkids profile, your contribution will help us continue our work in countries like Uganda. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. You can choose to follow their updates and send them get well messages. That means that each year, you're a part of helping 12 different children, beginning with Calvin. We call it being a CURE Hero!

Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

It's always wonderful when God uses our family to bring healing to our lives. Sometimes that's our spiritual family, and sometimes it's our actual brothers and sisters! In Winnie's case, God used her big sister Susan to bring her and her son Calvin to CURE Uganda.

Calvin is Winnie's second child, and he was a happy and healthy baby until at six weeks old he developed a fever and seizures. The big hospital in the capital city treated him for bacterial meningitis, and all seemed well until at four months old Winnie noticed he was crying a lot and his head was increasing in size. She wasn't exactly sure what to do, where to go, or how much caring for him would cost. Additionally, her husband left her and the children, leaving her dependent on her relatives to care for her eight-year old while she sought care for Calvin. Thankfully, big sister Susan searched and searched online until she discovered CURE Uganda! Here she learned that Calvin has a condition called hydrocephalus which is where Calvin's brain can't drain excess fluid, causing the pressure to build up and his head to grow. It can be a dangerous condition, but with treatment, he can live a good life!

Winnie is a Christian and is praying for her son — and she's thankful to be here at CURE! "I feel hope, and that I'll be helped, and I'm praying that my baby will be ok". She's especially thankful for the kindness of our nursing team: "they are not rude, they take care of us, and I really appreciate it". We're so glad that God used Susan to bring Calvin and Winnie here to CURE and we pray they'll continue to find encouragement and healing. Thank you for joining with us in praying for them!

Calvin was discharged early this morning! His stitches will be removed two weeks from now at a hospital near his home and we will review him next month. Please be praying for him.

Dr. Duy, who did Calvin's surgery, let us know that Calvin's anatomy was complicated so he wasn't able to do the planned procedure and had to do a shunt placement instead. A shunt is a small pump that drains the excess fluid from Calvin's brain, relieving the pressure from the hydrocephalus, and allowing him to live normally. The planned procedure would have allowed Calvin's body to do this naturally, but a shunt is a great next best option! Calvin is currently recovering in the ICU which is normal. His mother Winnie has spent her day praying, doing laundry, and chatting with the other moms here at CURE Uganda. She told us that she has made many friends at CURE and they have agreed to always pray for each other! Photo of Calvin

Calvin is having his surgery today! Winnie shared with us that she was feeling pretty scared about the surgery, but we encouraged her that our CURE neurosurgeons perform this procedure every day, and they are incredible. We're praying that God would give Winnie peace as she waits for the surgery this afternoon. Photo of Calvin

Winnie and Calvin are settling into life here at CURE Uganda and getting to know some of the other moms and babies staying in our hostel. It's a busy week so they're waiting to get on the surgery schedule as the doctors evaluate which patients most urgently need surgery. Today Pastor Simon Peter gave some of the moms a tour of CURE and shared about some income-generating projects they can consider, including our chicken project! When moms bring their babies back for 3 consecutive review appointments, they're given a hen and rooster to help them start their own small business. We hope this is something that can be useful to Winnie in the future, but for now, she's focused on getting baby Calvin the surgery that he needs! Photo of Calvin
