When Safina was pregnant with Arafat, she attended all her antenatal appointments and it is at one of these appointments that she was asked to do an ultrasound. The ultrasound revealed that the baby she was carrying had hydrocephalus. The doctors talked to her, counseled her, and prepared her to have baby Arafat. “When she saw her baby after the c-section, she was very relieved because his condition is not as bad as she thought it would be, and they say that it was a miracle," Arafat’s Aunt Sylvia told us. She's with him now at CURE Uganda.
When Arafat’s mom Safina learned about her unborn child’s condition and that he had to be brought to CURE Uganda, she talked to her family and they have been very supportive since then. In fact, Safina spoke to her sister Sylvia about helping her bring Arafat to CURE Uganda when he was born because she also knew that she would have to give birth through a c-section and wouldn’t have the ability to bring him by herself. Arafat’s mother is a tailor and his father, Habib, is a mechanic. They both earn very little money, and Arafat has four siblings back at home. Of the four siblings, one of them has sickle cell disease and because of that, his family is worried about their future. It will be difficult taking care of a child with hydrocephalus and one with sickle cell disease. Habib is taking care of his wife while Sylvia is taking care of Arafat here at CURE Uganda. She updates Safina and Habib about what is happening at CURE Uganda, the baby’s condition, and the plans being made for his surgery. Please pray for the whole family!
Arafat was discharged over the weekend. He will be reviewed at a mobile clinic closer to home!
Arafat is back in the ward and everything looks good! He is feeding well and the pressure in his head has clearly reduced because his head has physically reduced in size. Safina is still a little bit weak, and it's understandable after all she's been through these last few weeks. She was sent to the lab for some tests to be done and then we shall start her on medicine! Please keep praying for both Safina and Arafat!
Arafat’s mom Safina managed to make it to CURE Uganda! She is still having post c-section pains, but she endured a 5-hour road trip to come and be with Arafat. Her sister Sylvia is still here helping as well. Safina says that Arafat had a calm night but was a little irritable this morning. She managed to breastfeed him but says that her milk isn’t enough, so she is supplementing with baby formula. Arafat will be discharged to the ward this morning. Please be praying for him.
Arafat had his surgery today! CURE Uganda neurosurgeon Dr. Justin Onen operated, with assistance from a visiting neurosurgeon from Vietnam, Dr. Bui Khuong Duy. Because CURE Uganda is one of the world leaders in the ETV/CPC procedure, we often have visiting neurosurgeons here from all over the world! The two surgeons created a small hole to allow Arafat's cerebrospinal fluid to flow more freely and also cauterized part of the brain that was making too much fluid. This should help things balance out in his brain. Arafat's currently recovering in the ICU with our nurses and his Aunt Sylvia taking care of him. Thanks for praying for this little guy today!
Today is Arafat’s fourth day at CURE Uganda. The anesthetists will be visiting him today to make a plan for his surgery. They think it will be this week. Today Sylvia spent some time praying and talking to Pastor Winnie from our spiritual department. Please be praying for Arafat, his mother Safina who is also still in the hospital, and his Aunt Sylvia who is with him here at CURE Uganda.
