Baby Trust was born with spina bifida, a condition where the spine doesn't properly form and some of the spinal nerves stick out of the baby's back in a fluid filled sack. It's a scary and dangerous condition and thankfully Trust's mother, Justine, had the presence of mind to immediately take Trust to a local hospital for treatment. Trust was given the surgery he needed, but this was only the beginning. Several days after his surgery, Justine noticed that Trust's head was beginning to swell in size. The doctors had to inform her that Trust has another condition, related to his spina bifida, called hydrocephalus. This condition is caused by drainage holes in the brain being blocked or non-existant. The lack of drainage causes a build up of fluid and pressure inside the skull and, if untreated, will eventually kill the baby. Recognizing the seriousness of the condition and aware of their abilities, the doctors of this hospital referred Trust and Justine here to us at CURE Uganda. Now that Trust is here, we will treat his hydrocephalus and finally return him home to settle safely in with his family and begin his life!

“As you can see, Trust is doing really well since he came out of surgery”, Justine said. She is excited because Trust’s head has already started reducing in size. He is feeding well and isn’t irritable anymore. She spoke to her family back home and her husband told her that they are preparing a party for Trust to welcome him home from hospital. Her two other sons, who are nine years and five years, said they can’t wait to see Trust. Nurse Amelia says that Trust is stable and will transferred back to the ward today. Please keep him in your prayers. Photo of Trust

Baby Trust is in the operating room now, undergoing an irrigation or a "washout" procedure. This is when our CURE Uganda neurosurgeons wash out the inside of the baby's brain with clean fluid to help remove infection. After the procedure, Trust will recover in the PACU and then be back with mama Justine in our ICU. Thanks for praying for a smooth surgery for this little guy!! Photo of Trust
