"The other girls at school use my foot against me in arguments. It makes me hate them because there is nothing I can do," Hassana tells us, her emotional pain evident in her strong words. When Hassana was just three years old, her foot began to deform. She soon found herself unable to lay her foot flat and walked around with it permanently in a "tip-toe" position. She doesn't remember ever walking normally, but her family tells her stories. She only knows the pain, both physical and emotional, that her condition brings her. She dreams of going to school and being able to focus solely on her education rather than the taunts of her peers. Thankfully, Hassana found out about us here at CURE Niger when one of our radio advertisements played on her radio. Daring to hope, she has now made the journey to our hospital where our surgical staff will fix her foot and will have her walking out of here with her head held high and her foot flat!
Today Hassana and her friends have mixed feelings. Hassana is excited that she got her cast off and that she will be going home. Her friends are happy she will be going home but sad that they will miss a friend. Nana (Hassana's friend closest to her) said "All my other friends are gone and now Hassana will be leaving." Pray for Hassana as she heads home, that her foot will continue to heal well and for her friends here at CURE Niger that she will be leaving behind!
In art therapy today, Hassana drew a picture of a tree and said, "This is where my friends and I sit at home." It is good to see Hassana thinking of home and smiling. She is still getting bandage changes and will hopefully see the doctor soon!
All the kids in the guest house including Hassana were at art therapy today. She was laughing and smiling the whole time! They played a couple games which Hassana was good at because she was all in and wanted to win! Later, they made crafts that looked like jellyfish. Lastly, they danced their heart out to some Rio soundtrack. Hassana and her friend are always in a good mood! Pray for Hassana that she may continue to bring joy to other patients as she already does!
We had a chance to sit down with Hassana today and read her a bunch of your get well messages! When we got to the part in one of the messages where you told her that you were praying that her healing would continue with as little pain as possible, she let out an emphatic "Amen!" and laughed. She says to thank you all for your love and prayers. Thanks for loving this young woman so well!
Praise! Hassana's infection has cleared up. Keep her in your prayers as she continues to get bandage changes in order to make sure the infection does not come back. After she found out she was infection free, she was relieved. "I was worried that it would not be healed yet," she said, but it is and please continue praying for her overall healing!
Hassana went in for a bandage change today. She says she feels fine, but her infection has not cleared yet. When Hassana saw that the infection was not healing she was still optimistic because she said she knows it will go away. Her smile is still there like any other day. Please pray for her for a speedy recovery, and that she will continue to be happy because that makes everything go by faster!
Hassana got her cast off today! Sadly she got an infection and so they had to deal with that today and give her another bandage. She will be checking in for bandage changes in the coming days. Please pray for her to not be discouraged by this, and that the infection will be healed as soon as possible.
Hassana was discharged today! She is in good shape and this time she leaves with a hard cast. She is now in the guesthouse and all her friends have given her a warm welcome back. She has already started to make her friends laugh, it is rewarding to watch her share her joy with the people around her!
Hassana is back in the ward today! She going into the OR again for a procedure called a "cast change under sedation." Basically she's going to have the position of her foot changed up which would be extremely painful if she was awake so she'll be put to sleep for it. In prep to go into the OR, Ichakou, one of our OR techs, had to remove Hassana's old bandages. The process didn't even phase Hassana and she is ready to go in!
Hassana is doing well. She is a very open person to be around. She was making jokes about how men cannot withstand as much pain as women. She was bragging about how she has not cried since she came to the hospital. Not in surgery, not in bandage change, nothing!
Hassana is a happy soul today. She is laughing, having fun, and making jokes! We are happy to see that she is enjoying herself! Hassana and Ema, from our spiritual staff, were making jokes about Hassana’s friend Aissa - about her gold tooth. Pray for Hassana that every day is as fun and happy as today so that she will not be homesick as well as make other peoples days filled with fun like she made Aissa’s today!
It's day one after surgery and Hassana is already being discharged! She is feeling a ton better and excited to be free of the ward. She will be staying at our patient guesthouse as she goes through her healing process so we will be seeing her around!
Hassana has had her surgery today! The doctors released some of the tendons in her foot in order to lengthen them. This will prevent her heel from being pulled up and she will be able to walk properly again!
"I'm not afraid, I'm excited about (the surgery) in fact. I'm happy I'm going to get healed!" says Hassana (R). We are overjoyed to have Hassana and her big smile around. She is such a happy person to have and is already making friends in the ward.
