Catherine's Story

“God should help me. I was scared and confused just praying for God to help me,” said Shantel and she continued, “I delivered from home but at four months, the head started to increase. When the head started increasing the head would fall forward and backwards. In the village the neighbors told me it might be some traditional illness. They did traditional treatment, it wasn’t helping so I decided to move to a hospital.” The traditional healer burned Catherine twice on the forehead, twice on the back of her head, three times on the each side of her head, and once on each elbow and knee. The burns left a thin scar in each place. “As a parent I was confused and wasn’t sure what to do, I was looking for every remedy so the baby would be fine,” said Shantel. After the traditional healer was unsuccessful she took Catherine to a local hospital which took her head circumference and told her the child had water on the brain and referred them to Mulago, the National Referral Hospital which sent them to CURE. Shantel husband's Ssalongo has been supportive and helpful in getting Catherine treatment. Thank you for your support and prayers that enable us to give Catherine the treatment she needs for healing!

“Catherine is always smiling and can say tata,” says Shantel. We learned that she can also sit with support and can hold objects in her hand. Her ETV, the procedure that was done at CURE Uganda to treat her for hydrocephalus, is working well. Her mother however still goes with her to the garden because she doesn’t trust leaving her with her siblings yet. Shantel is hoping that by the end of the year Catherine will be able to sit by herself so that she can work her garden well. Please keep Catherine in your prayers! Photo of Catherine

“I am happy, I am hopeful everything will be fine. I have been praying for the child that they will come back well. That God gives wisdom to the doctors to take care of the child well,” said Shantel. This morning a short prayer was said before Catherine was taken into surgery, and after her nurse Mildred finished praying, Shantel continued praying as Catherine’s vitals were being taken. Catherine is now out of surgery where Dr. Peter performed an ETV/CPC. She will soon be transferred to the ICU where she will spend the night. Please keep Catherine in your prayers that she have a quick recovery. Photo of Catherine
