CURE in Uganda

The picture above is of CURE in Uganda. Everyone who serves with CURE in Uganda, from medical professionals to office staff, are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical and spiritual care to people who, without CURE, couldn't find it and couldn't afford it, just like Hiba. To do that, we're inviting you to partner with us.

We need to raise approximately $1000 to treat children like Hiba. When you give a gift through Hiba's CUREkids profile, your contribution will help us continue our work in countries like Uganda. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. You can choose to follow their updates and send them get well messages. That means that each year, you're a part of helping 12 different children, beginning with Hiba. We call it being a CURE Hero!

Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

Hiba's mother Hirat is 19 years old and a hairdresser from the central region of Uganda. After finishing high school, she enrolled in cosmetology classes. She is the youngest of 8 children and lives with her boyfriend, Hakim. She moved almost 7 hours from home after meeting Hakim, and just three weeks ago, she gave birth to the couple's first born, Hiba. There were no issues with the birth, but one week later, Hiba developed meningitis and fell very ill. After visiting a mission hospital in Kampala, baby Hiba was diagnosed with post-infection hydrocephalus. Hirat was unfamiliar with hydrocephalus and had not heard of CURE. She was referred by the mission hospital and traveled with her mother after being discharged in Kampala.

“Mummy is my best friend, I go everywhere with her,” says Hiba who spoke to us for the very first time since we first met her in 2014 when she had surgery. She was just a few weeks old then, with hydrocephalus and she had a shunt placement. Over the years she has been gradually progressing and her mom has been faithful in bringing her for her routine reviews. When last reviewed her in April 2016, she could only crawl by then but now she is walking, talking, and completely healthy. Her mother Hirat has some photos of Hiba of before surgery, after, and during her stay at CURE Hospital that she shared with the other moms in the ward. They congratulated her and thanked her for taking good care of Hiba. One mother said, “I will do my best to make sure my child gets well like yours.” Hirat says that although she plans to take her to school this year, she is so worried because she has never been away from her baby since she was born. We thank you for your prayers for Hiba's healing! We know that your prayers have played a big role in her progress! Photo of Hiba

Today Hiba and Hirat came to CURE and Hiba is doing very well, she can walk and she can even speak a few words! She even told us her name! According to Hirat, Hiba is a very happy girl and she loves playing and laughing. She walked and crawled all over the out patient department as she waited for her doctor. Hirat and Hiba moved from the city and are now living just a couple of hours away from CURE so we will be seeing them more often. Please keep them in your prayers! Photo of Hiba

Hiba was seen by CURE doctors last week at a mobile clinic in the capital city of Kampala. She was given antibiotics to prevent infection since the surgical site is still healing. Otherwise, she is doing well and will be reviewed again in November. http://bit.ly/1DQ9hyx Photo of Hiba

Hiba Nampewo was discharged and is scheduled for a future follow up appointment at the end of this month at the mobile CURE clinic in Kampala. Hirat has been advised to have Hiba's stitches removed a day before the clinic at the nearest health center. http://bit.ly/1vN1ajH Photo of Hiba

Hiba Nampewo is in surgery at CURE Uganda. She is scheduled for the 2nd surgery of the day so the nurses advised mom to stop feeding at 6am. We will update once Hiba is transferred to the recovery ward. Hirat was a bit nervous this morning but we chatted with her for a few minutes and she calmed down and even laughed. She has plenty of mothers around her that have been through the same exact thing and that's comforting for her.

Hiba is being prepped for surgery tomorrow. If her lab work comes back and deems her healthy, she will be on the schedule in the morning. Mom has settled into the ward and has already requested pictures of her baby to take home. We will have a couple of photos printed tonight and deliver them to her in the morning while Hiba is in theater to help comfort her.

Hiba has arrived at CURE Uganda and will be treated for hydrocephalus this week. We chatted with her mother this morning, Hirat, for a few minutes. It's her first-born and she is worried about Hiba surviving. Please follow along and pray for these two as they are prepped and briefed on the effects of hydrocephalus and treatment. It's a long road ahead but Hirat has already started the journey by arriving with her baby girl. http://bit.ly/1tEYBgx Photo of Hiba
