“I was relieved when we were told that CURE Philippines could help my son, and we didn’t need to worry about expensive hospital bills. Since the pandemic started, my husband’s job as an on-call truck driver has been greatly affected, and we didn’t have the means to pay for my son’s hospitalization,” Arlene, Joel’s mother shares.
Joel is a sixteen-year-old who has a fascination with motorcycles. At the age of ten, he already learned how to drive one! However, he got into an accident while driving his motorcycle a few weeks ago. “I was on my way to drive my uncle to his workplace when a dog got loose and crossed the street. I avoided it, but then it suddenly ran back towards where I was headed. I lost control of the brakes and hurt my arm,” Joel recounts.
Due to the impact of the fall, Joel sustained a fracture on his left arm. His family brought him to a nearby hospital where they learned Joel needed surgical intervention, but they passed up on the opportunity since the expense of the surgery was more than they could afford. Thankfully, a relative who had surgery at the CURE Children's Hospital of the Philippines referred them to us.
Please welcome Joel and his family to CURE Philippines!
Child Mentor Patricia spent time with Joel this morning and shared the story of the ten lepers healed by Jesus in Luke 17. Joel learned that out of the ten lepers who were healed, only one thanked Jesus. When Patricia asked him about his reflection, he told us he wanted to become like the leper who went back to say “thank you” to Jesus. Joel immediately applied what he learned by praying and thanking Jesus for his healing and recovery. He was then given an audio bible donated by our generous donors and partners to help him grow in his relationship with God. Joel came home with a lot of things to be thankful for and that includes all of you who are supporting him in his healing journey! We will see him again next week for a follow-up!
Joel woke up early today in preparation for his trip down to the operating room. Patient Ministry Coordinator Mary Ann prayed that Joel will be at peace during the surgery and know that God is in control. Since Joel broke his wrist, the medical team had to put the broken bones back in proper alignment. The bones were secured with the use of a surgical plate and screws to help guide them to grow in the correct position. Thanks for praying. Joel’s surgery was a success!
We are glad to have Joel and Arlene here with us. For the past two weeks, Joel hasn’t been able to write his homework and his daily activities have only been at a bare minimum because of his fractured arm. But this is about to change, as he undergoes surgery tomorrow! “I feel nervous since this is my first hospitalization,” Joel shared. We encouraged him by telling him the wonderful news that he isn’t facing this alone because there are people like you who will be lifting him up in prayer! Please pray for peace for Joel as he gets ready to go into the operating room for surgery.
