“When JB was born, I received what God gave me. There were three of us in the family that had babies in July of 2012, and all three babies had cleft lips. My grandmother was afraid, and told us we should just kill JB by choking him. I told her 'No, that will curse us, it will come back to get us.' Since then, JB’s two cousins have had surgery [to repair their cleft lips]. My grandmother has apologized, and asked for forgiveness for what she said when they were born.” Jelie, JB’s mom, said.
Jelie’s willingness to stand up to her grandmother gave the world a tremendous gift. JB is the second of four kids in his family, and according to Jelie, “He never fights with his siblings, he loves them all. He plays nonstop, he never gets tired of playing. He’s always hungry too!” All that energy takes a lot of fuel. “He’s very active at school, but his teachers are very impressed with him. He always answers their questions, and likes to read and write. The kids at school never bully him, his teachers have told the other kids not to bother him, and they obey. He has a lot of friends!”
JB’s confidence is unquestionable. Everyone he meets is a friend, and even though he answers most questions with an energetic head nod, he connects with anyone he come into contact with. We’re excited to have him at CURE, and we’re excited to see the impact this little leader will have in the future!
What a difference a week makes! JB returned to have his stitches removed, and all we can say is "WOW!" As usual, he couldn't stop smiling, and now he has even more reason to! He will return to have his cleft palate repaired at a future date, but for now, we'll let him enjoy his new smile. Thanks to all of you for helping make JB's new grin possible!
The grin is smaller and the energy level is lower, but JB is one happy guy! Most kids can't smile for a few days after surgery, but he still managed to get a small one out for us, our Mr. Happy just can't help himself! He's headed home today, but we'll see him next week when the bandages come off and the stitches come out. We'll see his new smile for the first time. Stay tuned!
We need to give the swelling a little time to go down, but JB definitely looks more handsome after surgery today! He had a huge grin as he entered the operating room. While he was asleep, Dr. Norm snipped and stitched for nearly two hours, but the meticulous work was worth it. JB is now cleft lip free! He woke up full of energy, so his personality didn't change. He will, however, spend the rest of the day resting before his next big adventure. There are several more kids waiting for cleft lip surgery this week, please keep them all in your prayers like you have been with JB!
Jelie says, "JB plays non-stop. That's just how he is. He is full of energy." JB has proven that true since the first day of admission. He has been running around, playing with other kids, meeting staff, and dancing to the music! It has been really fun meeting and hanging out with him. We asked, "Do you think you're gonna look even more handsome after surgery?" His answer was a BIG nod on his head! Tomorrow is JB's big day and we'd love to have people like you, from all over the world, praying for him!
