“I thought she'd never walk, so I am so thankful to Jesus because Charish started to walk when she was 4-years-old." - While there have been small victories in Charish’s life, her mom Jenny has also seen her share of challenges and tears while raising her daughter. Jenny would pray fervently for Jesus to heal her daughter's feet, and soon enough, little Charish followed suit, asking God for healing. After being turned away countless times by local government agencies, the family ended up hearing about CURE through a church friend. Now Jenny hopes they will finally have an answer to their longtime prayers.
Although Charish has been walking for a year, she still experiences pain, not just physically, but emotionally, as others tease and mock her. “It’s very hard. She and I have both cried a lot,” Jenny told us, adding, “It’s also hard to see other kids that don’t have to struggle." Charish is set to begin school this year, but she is afraid that other kids will continue to make fun of her. Jenny’s biggest hope is that Charish will be healed and be able to walk normally, and her fear of others will diminish. And Charish’s biggest hope? Like many of the fashionistas that come to CURE, she just wants to wear “real” shoes!
Charish is scheduled for surgery tomorrow, we are so excited to watch her go from walking to running and dancing! All in fancy shoes, of course. Please pray with us for successful procedures tomorrow and for a solid start down the road of both emotional and physical healing.
We received an awesome email from a representative of International Care Ministries, another organization that helps kids in need, with a picture of a familiar face! It was our adorable Charish, they wanted to let us know that she’s doing well, and her feet are looking perfect. She’s wearing her girly shoes, just as she had hoped, although we had to giggle at her Spiderman socks, she still has a bit of spunk in her! Since Charish lives so far from Davao, ICM has been making sure she’s being taken care of locally, we love partnering with other groups who love kids as much as we do!
Charish had her casts removed today, and she doesn’t need a new set, she’s done, yay! She was nervous to have them taken off, even though her buddy Dr. Jun was doing it. She held his arm for most of the removal, and once she realized the saw was harmless, she was pretty interested in the whole process. She was already walking on her casts, so with just a bit of physical therapy, she’ll be running in no time!
Charish came in for what we thought would be a cast change today, and we were so happy to see her! She was acting shy, but was OK hanging out with Dr. Jun. The good news is, she didn’t need her casts changed, because hers are still in good shape, and she can start walking on them. She spent a bit in physical therapy to learn a few exercises. We will see her in a month, when those casts will hopefully come off for good!
Charish gets to go home tomorrow! She received a surprise gift yesterday from a local missionary who read her story and wanted to bless her. She brought gifts for all the kids in the ward, including two new pairs of girly sandals, just what Charish wished for! Although she can’t wear them on her feet for a while, she had fun wearing them on her hands. Charish goes home tomorrow and will return in May for a follow up, please pray for her this coming month as she continues to heal.
Sweet Charish was feeling emotional today. She was upset at the staff for “making her hurt”, and scared because her casts had a bit of blood on them, which is normal. It’s hard for her to understand the entire process, but we know in the end, when she’s running and dancing, it will be worth it! She was happy to be snuggled up to Jenny this afternoon, and despite the pain, she is resting peacefully, which is always a good sign. Thank you for your prayers!
Charish bravely fought back tears as she and Jenny entered the operating theater this morning. Her surgery went quickly, with two teams simultaneously working on both ankles. She woke up with Jenny back at her side, and gave her a huge, relieved hug. Nurse Vivian showed Charish her first pair of “real shoes”, a pair of white cast “boots”. She was surprised to see her feet pointing the right way for the first time in her life. Please pray for a restful night tonight!
After being admitted this morning, Charish spent some time driving around the playroom, getting some energy out before tomorrow’s procedure. She'll have both of her clubfeet corrected in one morning - what a huge, life changing event! We had a chance to pray for both Charish and Jenny this afternoon. Although Jenny is happy they are finally getting help for Charish’s condition, she is understandably nervous. Charish was all smiles this afternoon, even making time to take some silly selfies with another staff member! Please pray that our little friend keeps that adorable smile throughout the week while recovering, and that her pain will be minimal after surgery!
