Azrael

Philippines - Age 4
May 27, 2022

Today’s a big day for Azrael as he finally went to the OR for surgery! Doctor Dino and a visiting surgeon from Free to Smile Foundation, Doctor Jason Dashow, worked on stitching together the tiny rip in Azrael’s lip. While the surgery was ongoing, Mary Ann, a member of the CURE spiritual ministry team, also counseled Mommy Greezy, who was anxious about the surgery. Mary Ann assured Greezy that God loves her and Azrael and that He has a beautiful plan for them, including Azrael’s healing! Thanks to your prayers, Greezy experienced the reality of this assurance as she was reunited with Azrael after his successful surgery! Because of your support and partnership, we get to provide surgical help and spiritual support to our patients and families. Thank you!

Michelle

Philippines - Age 16
May 26, 2022

Michelle was supposed to undergo surgery at the end of the year last year. But since her mother works overseas, the admission process requires Mommy Leewanie to write a document that authorizes Aunt Dara to be her caretaker. It took quite some time to get this requirement sorted out, but we thank God that Michelle reached another milestone in her healing journey - her successful surgery! Our medical team performed a procedure called an “osteotomy” where incisions were made on the outer bone of Michelle’s lower limb called the “fibula” and the shinbone or “tibia”. Afterward, these bones were cut and reshaped to correct her leg’s alignment and rotation. They finished the procedure by putting surgical screws in the surgical site and applying a long cast on her leg to hold the correction in place as she heals. Please continue to pray as Michelle recovers!

Alexander

Philippines - Age 19
May 26, 2022

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen Alexander! He’s been religiously doing speech therapy sessions online and we’re pretty proud of his commitment and hard work. However, the medical team deemed it best to have him undergo further corrective surgery to improve the anatomy of his palate to enable him to speak and articulate more clearly. So, he’s back in the OR for an open rhinoplasty procedure. Alexander’s nose has been affected because of his cleft condition, making his nasal appearance look uneven. To address this, Doctors Andrew and a visiting surgeon from Free to Smile Foundation, Doctor Stavan Patel, worked on harvesting cartilage from Alexander’s rib to provide more shape and symmetry to the nose. Thanks to the wisdom bestowed by God to the doctors and your continued support and partnership, our patients get the best result possible through our comprehensive cleft care! Alexander is now ready to go home and will come back next week for a follow-up!

Sheena

Philippines - Age 21
May 26, 2022

It’s been a while since we’ve given an update about Sheena’s progress, but here’s a rundown on how she’s doing so far. She’s continued doing speech therapy sessions with our Speech Therapist, but, as per assessment, her soft palate is not long enough to firmly close against the back of the throat during speech. This results in a nasal-sounding speech. The medical team decided to do another surgery called pharyngeal flap procedure to correct the anatomical structure of her palate. The doctors took a flap of tissue from the back of Sheena’s throat (pharyngeal wall) and attached it to the soft palate (velum). This flap forms a “bridge” to close the gap between the back of the throat and the soft palate, making a seal to prevent air from leaking through her nose. We thank God the surgery was a success, and Sheena was up and about immediately after! She is now advised only to eat soft foods for the next three weeks while she recuperates at home. Sheena’s healing journey may take some time, so please continue encouraging her with your prayers and get-well messages! We will see her again in three months!

Ereanne

Philippines - Age 7
May 26, 2022

Brave little Ereanne is back in the OR for her alveolar bone graft procedure. As explained in her previous status update, she developed a cleft in her alveolus or the ridge of bone that holds the teeth in her gums. Fixing this will allow for proper tooth development, which is important because missing teeth can have a negative effect on a child’s eating, digestion, facial growth, and appearance. Doctor Andrew and Doctor Stavan Patel, a visiting surgeon from Free to Smile Foundation, worked together by first harvesting a bone graft from Ereanne’s right hip. The bone is then shaped to form the patch that will close the hole in her alveolar bone. This will help stabilize the bone arch, providing better support for the base of the nose and new bone for the roots of the developing teeth to grow into. It was a pretty quick procedure, and Ereanne will see us again in three months for a check-up! Please continue to send your get-well messages and prayers to encourage her as she heals!
