We are happy to welcome our new friends, Fritz and Carlite! They come from a city in Visayas Islands, which is located in the central part of the Philippine archipelago. “We rode a bus, boat, and plane just to get here!” Fritz told us. They have come a long way and are super excited to start their journey toward being clubfoot-free! Please help give them a warm welcome by sending them messages of encouragement and prayers!
Ruel was sleeping soundly when we visited him in the ward. This is good news since patients don’t usually get a lot of rest due to pain and discomfort, especially after a big surgery. Ruel will now be transferred to the patient hostel provided by partner organization, Seeds of Dignity. There he will continue to rest and recover. We will see him again next week!
Since the medical team was already satisfied with the correction achieved by the traction, Riyan is now ready for her second procedure. This procedure will aim to put her femur (thigh bone) back in the hip socket. The medical team performed a procedure called “open reduction,” where they placed a surgical implant in the hip so the bones stay in place and heal in the correct alignment. Riyan was then placed in a spica cast; this cast covers her hips and legs to immobilize her bones while she heals. Riyan has now been discharged from the hospital. However, she will still stay at the patient hostel provided by partner organization, Seeds of Dignity, because she will need frequent visits to the hospital for check-ups. Please continue to pray for Riyan as she recovers!
Claire finally graduated from weekly cast changes and underwent surgery this week. Since the muscles and tendons in her foot are already supple enough because of the casting, the medical team only performed a simple procedure called “tendon lengthening.” They did this by cutting a small incision near her heel to release the tight tendon and correct the deformity. Afterward, Claire’s foot was wrapped in a cast to help stabilize the foot while she healed. Thanks to your prayers, Claire is now one step closer to becoming clubfoot-free!
Ruel’s prayers have finally been answered as he went down to the operating room to undergo life-changing surgery! The doctors decided to work on his left leg first so he can still get around using his other leg with the help of crutches while healing up. They performed multiple surgeries to correct the deformity in Ruel’s leg. First, they released the peroneal nerve found in the knee to help improve his gait or manner of walking. A surgical procedure called “osteotomy” was also performed by cutting and realigning the “femur” or “thigh bone” to straighten his leg. Lastly, they repositioned the “patella” or “kneecap” to help correct the angle of his leg. It was a tedious process but thanks to your prayers, Ruel’s surgery was a success and he is now reunited with Mommy Josephine in the ward! https://youtu.be/LpzIZ26UPS0
