Xhean

Xhean complained of some post-op pain last night but he woke up this morning feeling better! We are proud of him for being such a tough cookie considering he just underwent a major surgery yesterday. Doctor Elsa checked the color of Xhean’s toes to ensure there’s good circulation in his operated leg and cleared him for discharged afterward. Since Xhean and Melva live in a city far away from the hospital, they will be staying at a lodging area provided by partner organization "Our Lady Victory." Staying here makes it easier for them to come back again next for Xhean’s follow-up appointment. Please continue to pray for Xhean’s recover!

Xhean was complaining of hunger pangs when we visited him today. He was on fasting since midnight to ensure his tummy wouldn’t hurt during surgery. Thankfully, his wait was finally over and he was wheeled to the OR a little before lunchtime. Doctor Elsa, together with the newest member of our medical team, Doctor Bill, worked together to make Xhean’s healing happen. They thought it best to operate on Xhean’s left leg first and work on the other leg at a later time. They made a cut on Xhean’s tibia (the bigger bone on the lower leg) and formed a wedge to swing his lower leg in proper alignment. Afterward, the growth plates near Xhean’s left knee were drilled to prevent the bowing from recurring and guide the bones to grow in the right direction. After hours of hard work from the medical team, Xhean was brought back to the ward where he enjoyed a chicken and spaghetti meal from Jollibee (a famous Filipino fastfood restaurant similar to McDonald’s)! Thank you for your prayers!

Good news! Jen is doing well post-op and is now going home! “A lot of people discouraged us to have Jen undergo surgery but we entrusted this decision to the Lord and we thank Him for the successful outcome of my daughter’s surgery,” Darmilyn shared in gratitude. Jen is not yet allowed to walk for now to give time for her bones to heal. Physical Therapist Therese came by to visit her and teach her some exercises to prevent her muscles from weakening while she’s on bed rest. We will see her again next week to check on her healing progress!

Xhean was supposed to visit us for his first appointment with the doctor last year. Unfortunately, the government issued a nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic and prevented him from coming to the hospital. Thankfully, intercity travels are now allowed and Xhean found his way back again to our doors! With the help of our partner organization, Our Lady of Victory, Xhean was finally seen by the doctor and he is admitted this week! Please pray for him as he undergoes surgery!

Jen finally had surgery today! She was a bit anxious but she still managed to give us a smile in spite of it. Doctor Samson initially planned to do corrective surgery on Jen’s left leg only but decided that it would be best to operate on both legs since her right leg also has slight deformity which could get worse over time. He and the medical team did a procedure epiphysiodesis. This is done by identifying the “physis” or the “growth plate” in Jen’s knees which is responsible for the lengthening of the bone. Afterward, the growth plates were drilled to arrest the bones' growth and hopefully swing her knees in proper alignment and correct her deformity. One of Jen’s favorite verses is from Mark 10:27 that says, “For with God, nothing shall be impossible.” She experienced the reality of this verse today as her long-time prayer was answered. We praise God and thank all of you for making the impossible possible, that is Jen’s healing through surgery!
