I want to become “Mai dumki ” (a fashion designer) said Maria. She is a 13 years old girl who recently arrived at CURE Niger Hospital. Her condition began eight years ago. Her legs started to bend outwardly-developing a condition known as bowed knees. Maria’s parents and the community would think of her illness as “Allah yakawo ” (God’s will). With every year passing by her condition worsened and the curvature became more obvious. In the same time, pain settled in and, it stopped Maria from doing what was expected of her which was carrying water, grinding the mill, taking care of her brothers. School became history. Four years later, Maria’s parents took her to the local hospital. Someone from the staff advised them to come to CURE Niger but they said, “We have no money”, and they returned home. Maria continued on with her life which became more and more bitter. The kids from the village used to call her, “gourgoia ” (the handicapped one). Maria stopped playing with them and spent her time mostly indoors. Three months ago a CURE mobile clinic arrived in her village. The doctors spoke with her parents and urged them to bring Maria at CURE Niger Hospital. They managed to get some money and Maria and her mother arrived here 2 weeks ago. They were impressed by the buildings and the attention they received here. Maria’s wish after stepping in the hospital’s yard was, “I want to leave this place on healthy legs.” While staying at CURE’s guesthouse she has made two good friends - Amira and Oubeida. When we asked Maria what are the things she wants do to once she will be healed, she replied, “I want to do all the things what people would normally do on earth – running!” and she started laughing.
