I want to become “Mai dumki ” (a fashion designer) said Maria. She is a 13 years old girl who recently arrived at CURE Niger Hospital. Her condition began eight years ago. Her legs started to bend outwardly-developing a condition known as bowed knees. Maria’s parents and the community would think of her illness as “Allah yakawo ” (God’s will). With every year passing by her condition worsened and the curvature became more obvious. In the same time, pain settled in and, it stopped Maria from doing what was expected of her which was carrying water, grinding the mill, taking care of her brothers. School became history. Four years later, Maria’s parents took her to the local hospital. Someone from the staff advised them to come to CURE Niger but they said, “We have no money”, and they returned home. Maria continued on with her life which became more and more bitter. The kids from the village used to call her, “gourgoia ” (the handicapped one). Maria stopped playing with them and spent her time mostly indoors. Three months ago a CURE mobile clinic arrived in her village. The doctors spoke with her parents and urged them to bring Maria at CURE Niger Hospital. They managed to get some money and Maria and her mother arrived here 2 weeks ago. They were impressed by the buildings and the attention they received here. Maria’s wish after stepping in the hospital’s yard was, “I want to leave this place on healthy legs.” While staying at CURE’s guesthouse she has made two good friends - Amira and Oubeida. When we asked Maria what are the things she wants do to once she will be healed, she replied, “I want to do all the things what people would normally do on earth – running!” and she started laughing.
Maria is still wearing a cast, but it doesn't stop her from walking around and having fun. She takes pleasure in all the activities that the spiritual team has to offer to our kids here, and she is often the first one to participate. Thank you for your prayers and your kind messages! They really have the power to heal!
Maria is acting goofy in front of the camera today. She is as much fun as a barrel of monkeys! Her recovery at our guesthouse is going great, and she will have her cast changed soon. While waiting for her next check-up, Maria definitely doesn’t get bored! She makes friends easily due to her cheerful nature. Please keep this lovely girl in your prayers.
Who said a game can't be considered an instrument of healing? Maria is playing in the sand with her friends from the guesthouse, and she likes winning! Her physical health is also improving. Maria is such a gregarious and sociable person and no doubt is an overcomer! Kindly pray for Maria's healing journey!
Maria went for her X-ray check-up and is all looking good! She overcame her previous fears, and she is happily looking forward to starting her recovery process. She will stay with us at the guesthouse for now. We truly appreciate your prayers. Keep showering her with your love and care!
Maria went through the surgery. Our doctors placed a metal nail in her femur to stabilize the bone. For the next few weeks it will hold her bone steady and protected while it heals. Maria has her leg on cast now and she returned to the ward. Please join with us in prayer for her recovery!
Maria is in the ward getting familiar with the nurses and the kids around her. She admitted that she is a little bit afraid of the upcoming surgery. We encouraged her to trust God and our doctors. We are more than ready to shower her with our love and care! Please pray for Maria's emotional and physical state as she prepares for the operation!
