Ismael was born with his little finger and his ring finger stuck together. A year ago, he received a surgery from a local hospital to release these fingers, but the surgery was not successful. During his "healing process" things actually got worse and he developed some skin contractures. These contractures force Ismael's fingers into permanently bent positions making his hands even more useless.
Ismael's mother Rachida learned about CURE Niger through a friend who had her son treated at our hospital. Even though Ismael's mother was preparing to go back to her village as Ismael's school is resuming, she cancelled her trip and decided to bring Ismael to our hospital. She knows that his healing will have a huge impact of his future. Ismael is also smart and can catch up on a few weeks of missed school work. Rachida is very happy with the warm welcome she received from our CURE Niger team and prays that her son recovers very soon!
Ismael came back to the hospital this morning. He finished with his bandage change and removed the tape. Afterward, she sent him to physiotherapy. Ismael is waiting for his turn to enter the physiotherapy room and start his exercises.
We met Ismael this morning in the dressing room! Ismael's wounds are healing well and his mother told us that he has taken the nurses advice to be more careful with his hand very seriously. We can see the evidence from the clean color of his bandage! Please, keep praying for Ismael.
After being discharged over the weekend and getting to spend time with his family, Ismael is back at CURE Niger to receive his first bandage change! We have learned from his mother that he has been very active at home, climbing trees and even doing karate with his friends. Rachida told us that she had to be very firm with Ismael so that he is careful not to injure his still healing hands. We will see Ismael again soon when he comes for a new bandage!
Ismael's surgery went well! He is in the recovery room where Deborah, the PACU nurse, is taking gook care of him while he is waking up from the anesthesia he received before his surgery. As he starts the recovery process, please pray for rapid healing!
