Up until seven months ago, Hamida was a little girl just like any other. She loved to play "kitchen" with her friends and one day, when her mom had gone into town, she decided to try the real thing. Hamida managed to light a real cooking fire, but this innocent act would change the course of her life drastically. Hamida's cloths ended up catching on fire and she couldn't get them off. She ran outside where an attentive neighbor was able to extinguish the flames, but not before Hamida's legs were badly burned. She was rushed to the hospital and, in time, her burns did heal. But they did so in a way where she developed burn contractures, or melted skin, that make her legs stuck in a useless bent position. It is impossible for Hamida to stand or walk like this.
Hamida's father was distraught and gave everything he had and searched everywhere to find his daughter healing, but his efforts were unsuccessful. Having exhausted all his resources, Hamida's father gave up hope and leaned to embrace the misfortune of his daughter. Against all odds though, one of Hamida's grandmother's friends visited them and learned about Hamida's condition. Being a Christian, he knew about CURE Niger because he has some friends who work here. He encouraged Hamida's parents to bring their daughter to us and he was convinced that they could find healing. Through the financial contribution of friends and relatives, Hamida and her grandmother were able to save enough to make the journey to CURE Niger. Today, Hamida is in the ward waiting for her turn to get surgery to transform her life and restore her legs!
We were happy to see Hamida in the bandage change room. She had just finished her bandage change and she's improving a lot! The nurse in charge told us that the skin grafts have taken well and there are just a few small wounds that have not yet healed. Let us continue to pray for her total healing!
The week has started up-side down for Hamida and her grandmother who lost her son back in their village this morning. Hamida is suffering double pain, the loss of her uncle and her grandmother who is traveling back to the village for the funerals while Hamida continues her stay with us. Please, pray for the Lord to comfort Hamida and her family as they pass through this painful situation and pray for Hamida's grandmother to have a safe journey.
Hamida is in very good shape and still healing well from her second operation. This morning we found her playing babysitter with her teddy bear. Please, continue your prayers for a complete healing and full recovery!
Hamida willingly volunteered to undo Ousseina, one of the patients at the guesthouse, and she does it with much love. We praise God for the strong bond of love and unity that is being formed between our guesthouse patients––who become one happy family at the end of their healing journey.
Slowly but surely, Hamida's wounds are healing well. Hamida had a bandage change and we were happy to learn from the nurse that the skin graft yielded successful results and the wounds are healing well. We will meet Hamida next week for another bandage change!
Hamida goes back to the guesthouse where she continues to recover. We found her sitting on a mat, enjoying the fresh air. As soon as she saw us, she asked to take a lot of pictures! We are very happy to see a smile on her face as she continues the journey towards healing. We ask that you pray that the joy of our Lord Jesus overflows in her!
We are very happy to see a tremendous difference between Hamida's initial condition and her actual condition after her surgery. Also, we are pleased to hear that Hamida's skin graft procedure went well. Having an idea of what awaits her in the OR, Hamida is more relaxed with this surgery. She is now recovering at the ward. Please continue your prayers for Hamida––they are working!
We caught Hamida in the bandage room this morning. Because her wounds are healing well, she no longer needs anesthesia when going through a bandage change! We are also happy to learn from the doctor that Hamida's wounds have healed well enough to have her second surgery. She is now ready to go through a skin draft procedure which is scheduled next week. Please pray for a successful surgery for Hamida as well as a speedy recovery!
Hamida continues to enjoy her stay at the guesthouse while she heals. Even though she is not able to jump and dance with the other children at the moment, she is happy to sing and clap along while sitting on the mat with her grandmother.
Hamida is making good progress. She spent the night in the ward because she will have a bandage change this morning. As she was asleep, we caught her grandmother telling Emanuel from the spiritual staff how Hamida and the other patients in the ward spent their night, under the lights, singing the songs he has taught them just like they used to do in village under the moonlight!
Hamida was discharged from the ward over the weekends and she'll continue her recovery at our long term patient guesthouse. We are happy to see her this morning in good shape and hear that she is feeling a lot better! She had a quick trip back to the OR today for a bandage change and wound cleaning. According to the nurses, she is healing well! Keep praying for Hamida's healing process!
Hamida's surgery went super well! Dr. Anthony was able to release the burn contractures meaning, once she heals up, she'll be able to straighten her leg once again! Hamida is resting in the recovery room while Deborah, the PACU nurse, looks after her. Please keep praying for Hamida's recovery!
