“I am happy I am going to get my fingers fixed,” said the 6 years old Abdoul Malik, bouncing on his bed waiting to receive surgery.

His accident happened three years ago when, while playing with other children around his uncle’s outdoor kitchen, Abdoul Malik accidentally dripped his right hand in the boiling cooking water, burning it badly. Abdoul Malik’s cry for help caught his mother’s attention who ran to his rescue and rushed him to the hospital. After a long time, the burn did eventually heal, but he developed burns contractures (melted flaps of skin) on his right hand’s little finger and ring finger, forcing the finders into a permanently bent position. The other kids he would play with in his neighborhood began to mock him, calling him "the leper."

Thankfully though, Abdoul Malik’s Mother heard about us here at CURE Niger through one of our radio advertisements. She wasted no time reaching out to us. Now Abdoul Malik has been admitted to receive his surgery to release his fingers. Very soon, he will be able to recover full mobility of his fingers and be able to play with his peers without being called names!

"We are the servants of Jesus, wherever He leads us, we will go. Be it in cities or in remote villages, wherever He leads us, we will go." These are powerful words that Abdoul Malik, along with the other children from the guesthouse, learned from Emanuel of the Spiritual Team. We pray that the words of this song become living words in the life of Abdoul Malik for the Glory of our Lord Jesus! Photo of Abdoul Malik

Abdoul Malik's fingers are healing well and are in good positions. After his therapy session, which went well, Abdoul Malik received his bandage change. The bandage is really small now and just covering two fingers! With his more-free hand, Abdoul Malik is very happy to play ball with the other patients under the supervision of aunty Salamatou from the spiritual team. Photo of Abdoul Malik

Abdoul Malik had a bandage change this morning. His wounds are healing well and, according to the doctor, he will be able to start his physical therapy on Wednesday! Let us pray for a complete healing of Abdoul Malik's wounds and that he may recover full motion of his fingers! Photo of Abdoul Malik

We were able to read Abdoul Malik his get well messages this morning and he loved them! "Please tell them thank you," he said, smiling. We hope you don't mind, but we shared some of your get well messages with some of the other kids as well - we thought that these messages about how much Jesus loves them would do them good too! Abdoul Malik is new to our longterm patient guesthouse, but he fits right in. He loves all the attention he gets from Emanuel, from our spiritual team, and was pretty hesitant to let him go after this morning's songs, games, and prayer. Photo of Abdoul Malik

Abdoul Malik is recovering well from surgery. So well that he's been discharged from the ward! But because he lives so far away, he'll stay at our patient guesthouse for a bit as he undergoes regular bandage changes, wound cleanings, and starts physical therapy. It's amazing to see how chummy he's already gotten with the other guesthouse kids in the space of a few hours! Keep praying for him as he recovers and thank God for the chance our spiritual team has to share with him and his mom as they stay in our guesthouse. Photo of Abdoul Malik

Abdoul is done with surgery! Here Dr. Anthony bends back Abdoul's last two fingers, testing just how constricted they are. Before surgery they could only bend about halfway, but now they lay straight! Pray for Abdoul as he recovers from surgery in our ward. Photo of Abdoul Malik
