Nana Farida is a quiet young lady who was born with a cleft lip and in a culture like Niger's, this is often associated with some kind of sin or misbehavior of the mother. But Nana Farida's mother, Rabi, did nothing wrong and was distraught seeing her daughter's condition. She knew full well the life of discrimination and ostracization Nana Farida would lead growing up with a cleft lip in their culture. Nana Farida's family was thankfully supportive of Rabi and encouraged her to take Nana Farida to the closest hospital. If was there that Rabi learned Nana Farida's lip is correctable and that hospital referred them here to us at CURE Niger. Now that Nana Farida is with us, our surgical staff will close up her cleft lip and allow her to return home with all the fanfare and joy a new addition to a family should have!
After chatting a little bit with our spiritual staff, Nana Farida had a visit from a previous patient of ours who was able to sit down and address a few fears Rabi had about Nana Farida's recovery process. We love the communal aspect of healing here at CURE Niger and how the patients who have already gone through the process are willing to work with and help the patients who are currently receiving treatment!
"Her lip is swollen, but it is just one lip now!" And indeed it is! Nana Farida is a little swollen and uncomfortable after her surgery, but that's the way these things go. What's incredible is how much different she already looks! Please join us in praising God for this journey of healing she is on with us here at CURE Niger!
Nana Farida has had her cleft lip surgery! She had what is known as an incomplete unilateral cleft lip which is thankfully the easiest kind to repair. Dr. Issa and his team did a great job stitching her up and while she was too young to really be scared or realize what was going on, her mom was nervous the entire time. Thank you so much for your prayers, but we're going to need more of them for strength as Nana Farida heals up from her surgery!
