Halimatou is a naturally inquisitive little one and it is that normally admirable trait that has unfortunately landed her here with us at CURE Niger. Just over a year ago, Halimatou was hanging out with her mom in the early hours of the morning as they prepared breakfast for the rest of the still sleeping family. Halimatou's mom prepared their kitchen fire, set water to boil, and mixed together a traditional nigerien porridge. As the porridge boiled, she went around finishing up the rest of her morning chores. In the meantime, Halimatou's inquisitive nature was enticed by the smell of the porridge wafting over from the fire. In just a brief moment of distraction, Halimatou made it to the fire and stuck her finger into the boiling mixture. The burns were instantaneous and bad. Halimatou's screams woke the whole household, but there was nothing they could do. Over time, Halimatou's burns did heal, but in a way where her pointer finger is stuck in a bent position. Thankfully, a local health clinic was able to tell them about us here at CURE Niger where Halimatou has now come. We will release her finger and send her home to a life unhindered by disability!

Halimatou had a good weekend healing up and was discharged today! She had a wound cleaning and bandage change over the weekend and then another one today in order to keep her newly free finger clear of infection as well as to make sure her skin graft takes to it's new location. To celebrate their discharged, Halimatou's mom got her her favorite mango juice and then they were off! Please be praying for this little one as we wait to see her in a few weeks for her follow up! Halimatou has had her surgery! Dr Milka was the main surgeon, but Dr Anthony was never far to offer advice and guidance as Dr Milka released Halimatou's finger and then took a small skin graft from her forearm and placed it over the newly exposed area of Halimatou's finger. Thank you all for your prayers and get well messages! Photo of Halimatou
