"Hassana was born like this and for a moment I could not believe what I saw," Mariama, Hassana's mother, recalls the first time she saw her daughter. Hassana was born with a cleft lip. "Being pregnant is very exciting and when you finally have your child, all you want to do is to hold your baby, but to see Hassana was different, she caught me off guard at first," Mariama admitted. Mariama soon became ok with the fact that her daughter was different than other babies, but it was much tougher when she got home. It was harder than she had ever imagined to face her neighbors, friends, and family being the mother of a child with a disability. Her husband had a hard time believing what he saw when he met his daughter, but he also soon accepted the fact that his daughter was born with a cleft lip. The hospital where Hassana was born mistakenly told her parents that a cleft lip is an untreatable condition. Hassana's father accepted this was their life now, but refused to be passive in caring for his daughter. He began looking around for resources to help him raise a daughter with a cleft lip. His search brought him to another hospital where he was told about us here at CURE Niger and of the life changing cleft lip surgeries that we do here. "I am happy now because now I know my daughter will not have a hard time growing up," finished Mariama, a small smile appearing on her face. Thank you for joining with us to bring hope and healing to Hassana and her family!
Hassana had another lip cleaning today and then had her stitches removed. With this final step, she is finally done with her time here with us! We'll see her again in a few months for a check up, but we can't imagine anything but good results when we see her again.
Hassana made it back for her lip cleaning today! She was not a fan of the process at all, but she made it through just fine. Her mom knows how important it is to keep the wound clean and free from infection so she did a great job helping hold Hassana still while the nurses worked. All in all, it was a superb team effort!
Hassana is doing well and is now resting. She has been discharged and is just getting a quick little nap in before the trip home. We are so happy she gets to go home, but we sad to see her leave. Pray for her that her healing goes well and we will see her again next week for her wound cleanings that will make sure her lip heals up nicely!
Hassana has gotten her surgery! When the doctors started the surgery they saw that Hassana's cleft lip had rigid edges that would later cause issues. They had to clip a bit of skin off her cleft lip to make it a smoother surface to sew the two parts together. We're happy to let you know that everything went well. Please pray for her as she recovers now!
