Raihane's Story

"It's hard when you have a dream and it seems like everything is going well, but then all that is shattered by just one quick event," Rachida, the mother of Raihane, told us, a tired sadness sitting deep behind her eyes. Rachinda loves her daughter more than anything in this world, but it has not been easy. When Raihane was almost a year old, she was in an accident that changed everything for this young family. Rachida had been heating water over their open cooking fire in order to give Raihane a much needed bath. Once the water was nice and hot, almost boiling as it would be mixed with cold water for the bath, Rachida removed the pot from the fire, set it on the floor, and went to smother the coals. In those few seconds while Rachida's back was turned, Raihane managed to crawl up to and tip over the simmering pot, drenching herself in the almost boiling water. Raihane's two hands and one of her feet were instantly and badly burned. With no medical care near where Rachida lives, there was nothing Rachida could do to help her suffering daughter. Raihane's burns did eventually heal, but they did so in a way where her fingers are permanently contracted in a fist-like position and she has a flap of skin that connects the top of her foot to her leg, pulling it upwards and making it impossible for her to move her foot freely. Rachida blames herself for Raihane's place in life, knowing that in Raihane's current state, Raihane will grow up mocked and excluded first by her future school mates and then by Nigerien society at large. Raihane's future weighs heavy on Rachida's soul. Thankfully, a past patient of ours here at CURE Niger moved to a house not far from where Raihane and Rachida live and was able to tell them about the treatment we offer here. He told them that when people come to CURE Niger, they get help and hope for a different future. Raihane wasted no time in coming here. Rachida ended by saying, "Coming to CURE Niger is like a second chance for us. It is a house of hope."

Raihane is back today for a bandage change! She's a hard one to make laugh, but that never stops us from trying ... even though we've only succeeded once ... On the medical front, she's doing incredibly well! Her mom, Rachida, is diligent in making sure she makes all her appointments and her hand is healing up nicely because of this! Photo of Raihane

Raihane has been discharged and was leaving but we got to get a quick photo of her and her mother. We hope to see her shortly and the doctors told us that she should be coming for physical therapy soon. Pray for her so that her healing process goes well and that when she comes back everything looks as it should! Photo of Raihane

Raihane got her surgery and everything went well! The doctors had wanted to try and operate on both her hands today, but had to change their plans. They had trouble finding an accessible vein in either of her legs to place the IV so they had to use a vein in her arm. This then prevented them from operating on that hand. Regardless of the interruption, Raihane's surgery on her one hand went super well and progress is progress! Please be praying for this little one as she rests up back in the ward! Photo of Raihane

Raihane is back for another surgery, we are so glad to see that she is doing well and she is ready for the next step! She was crying this morning because she was hungry because she wasn't allowed to eat before going into the OR. Her mother walked around with her and she was able to calm down. Please pray for her as she goes in for her next surgery! Photo of Raihane

Raihane is doing great. Everything is going well and she is even smiling. Before her surgery, she did not smile or laugh much. Now though, she smiles and laughs at the camera. We are happy everything went smoothly from the surgery up until now. Raihane has been discharged, but we will see her soon when she comes for a bandage change! Photo of Raihane

As with anything in life, things don't always go as planned and the doctors called an audible that they were only going to release Raihane's foot during this surgery rather than her foot and her hand at the same time as was originally planned. The doctors released the burn contracted that was messing with her foot and positioned her foot at an angle where she would be able to stretch it out properly. Everything went well, but please keep her in your prayers so that she may have a safe and clean recovery! Photo of Raihane

Raihane is here at CURE Niger! We are excited that she is about to start her healing process with us. She cried a lot this morning when she saw the doctors and nurses in their gowns and it took her a while to calm down. By the time she had, the doctors passed by again she started to cry once more! Raihane will be getting surgery for the burn contractures on both her hand and foot at the same time. Please pray for her that her fears are eliminated and she's a pro at this whole surgery thing!
