Massaoudou's Story

“When he got a younger sister, he would count her fingers and say, 'Why can't my hands be like this? Can you take (my extra fingers) off?' ” said Bashira, Massaoudou's mother. Massaoudou is a young boy who was born with six fingers on each hand… Read more

“When he got a younger sister, he would count her fingers and say, 'Why can't my hands be like this? Can you take (my extra fingers) off?' ” said Bashira, Massaoudou's mother. Massaoudou is a young boy who was born with six fingers on each hand. Bashira did her best to think positively when she saw his hands for the first time, “At least it's just one extra finger on each hand” she remembers thinking. She asked the hospital where he was born if there was something they could do, but the doctors there said they didn't have either the experience or the facilities to help. Massaoudou has trouble playing with other kids his age because they constantly make fun of him. They pull at and twist his sixth fingers and call him names. Massaoudou used to go to school, but Bashira pulled him out after just one week because of the verbal and physical abuse being heaped upon his young head. The whole family knows this is just the start of Massaoudou's difficulties as Nigerien culture is not kind to those who are physically different than everyone else. Massaoudou's family has tried getting help from all over, but they have been turned away everywhere they have gone. One day though, they saw CURE Niger’s commercial on TV and they decided to give their quest for healing one last shot! Thankfully, Massaoudou's condition is something we can indeed treat here at CURE Niger and we will get Massaoudou sorted out in no time. Massaoudou says as soon as he gets his two extra fingers amputated, he will go back to school and this is a goal we are 100% behind helping him achieve!

Massaoudou just had his surgery! The doctors amputated his sixth finger on each hand. They used the cauterizer to easily cut through the tissue and keep bleeding to a minimum. A cauterizer is the pen-like tool you can see them using in the photo. It uses electricity to separate tissue and seal off any parts of the body that may cause a lot of bleeding. Please pray for Massaoudou as he begins the healing process and that everything continues going well! Photo of Massaoudou

Massaoudou is here at CURE Niger with us! Even though he is not very talkative, we are excited to have him here with us. His mother reassured us he's not chatty simply because he does not know us yet. Pray for him as he prepares to go in for surgery and that he will feel comfortable to be himself during his stay here!
