Zakari's Story

“I have six children, but one died a year ago and Zakari being crippled was like losing another one. Yes, he is alive, but will he live? Will he ever be able to marry and have a family?” asked Fastima, Zakari’s mother. Zakari is a shy kid, but opens up after a few jokes and laughs. He is a 5-year-old boy that enjoys playing with other kids his age, but is limited due to not being able to bend his knee. His parents noticed his condition a few years after he was born while he was using the potty. They noticed that he would only bend one leg while he kept the other one straight. They wanted to get help, but could not afford to go to a hospital. Due to Zakari having his condition, his family started noticing other people around town with similar conditions. They began to talk to these people and soon found out about us here at CURE Niger. “This news gave me hope for a better future,” Fatsima told us with excitement in her voice. Zakari and Fastima are now here to start his journey to healing!

Zakari is back again and his condition has improved! He now can walk with his walker! He can stand on his leg for a few minutes but then needs the walker again. He had therapy today and they gave him exercises to do so that his knee will be able to hold him up. Pray for him as he continues with his healing process! Photo of Zakari

Zakari came back! He is here for therapy and since we have a weekly therapist volunteer, she worked with him today. Zakari still has trouble bending his leg well so she played games with him that would make him bend his leg without even realizing he's doing it! He was surprised at how far he could bend his leg! Pray for him and his knee so that he may be able to use it it's full potential! Photo of Zakari

Zakari is back for physical therapy. Sadly, the physical therapist noticed one of the threads from his stitches has come loose. As they were removing the thread, Zakari complained about his surgical site hurting so the medical staff decided that they need to put off therapy for a while in order not to risk the surgical site opening up again. Zakari has already missed most of the school this year and the longer he stays the more he'll miss. Pray for Zakari so that he may be able to continue with his healing process and he'll be able to go back home! Photo of Zakari

Zakari came back for a checkup! We are glad to see him doing well. He got his cast off, but the process of making his foot straight is painful a painful one. He will be getting an X-ray so the doctors can see what is up with his knee. If all is good, he will begin physical therapy soon! Photo of Zakari

Zakari is feeling like himself again. He is able to sit up and play, he even created a special hand shake with Ema who is on our spiritual staff. Ema had one of the longest conversations anyone has had with Zakari. They talked about what their favorite types of meat was, Zakari said his favorite is mutton. In other good news, Zakari was discharged today! Please continue to pray for him as he heads home. Photo of Zakari

"He is doing way better," Fastima told us. Zakari has been out of surgery for a while now and we are yet to see a smile on his face. Fastima reassured us telling us that he is ok and he was just not in the mood of doing much. He was happy to look at his before pictures though telling us that now his leg can bend. Photo of Zakari

Zakari was in surgery today! He was in for a procedure that is called a Quadricepsplasty. Basically, it is a release of some of the quadricep muscles so that he will be able to bend his knee. This will help him walk with ease as he will be able to move his knee joints more freely! Photo of Zakari

Zakari is here with us! He is such a fun and playful kid once you get to know him. He may seem shy at first, but then when he gets to know you, he can be a talker! We are excited for him to be with us!
