“I’m going to wear high heels!” Mariam blurts out in answer to what she wants to do when she’s healed. Her eyes scream joy as she envisions the not so distant future. Mariam has bow legs, a condition that has long overshadowed the tenacity this young one has for life. She was slow to walk with even her younger brother learning before her and theories abounded in their neighborhood. Some attributed her delay to the devil while others claimed it was Mariam’s mother’s fault for holding her too much. When Mariam’s legs began to visibly bow, the general consensus shifted to the influence of the devil and Mariam was brought to the traditional healer. After years of medications and ceremonies with no change, Mariam was beginning to lose hope. By this point, she had started school and the merciless teasing for the shape of her legs had begun. It wasn’t until she begged her mother to take her to the hospital that they finally made the long trip to the nearest city with a hospital. There they met a CURE Clubfoot counselor who told them about us here at CURE Niger. Mariam has now arrived at our hospital where our medical staff will straighten her legs and get her one step closer to that life of glamor and heels that she envisions!
Our little lady Miriam stopped by for her check up today! She's complaining of a little pain as a result of a pin and the cast rubbing each other. Her leg is healing up as it should be, but it's not quite strong enough just yet. After her x-ray to check out the pin position, she had a new cast put on in a way that should relieve the pain while still allowing her leg to continue healing. All in all it was a good check up and we'll be seeing her again in another few weeks!
Mariam and Hadidja were able to spend the weekend together giggling away and, to make things even better, a guest donated some beanie babies for them to play with! Mariam got a cat while Hadidja got a dog. The final piece of good news for today is that Mariam got discharged and gets to finish healing up at home! While she won't be with us every day anymore, please continue praying for her, both that her leg heals up properly and that the words of Jesus she heard while here take root in her life!
The doctor's checked Mariam out during rounds this morning and they're happy with how she's recovering. She'll be here for a little longer, but, to make it easier, Mariam's cousin, Hadidja, is here to hang out with her! We were also able to deliver a whole bunch of get well messages to Mariam this morning which made her feel super loved and cared for!
Mariam's face says it all. She's happy the surgery is finished, but not so happy about having her leg all bound up in a cast. No worries though, she'll be used to it soon and then it'll be time to take it off! Please be praying that she finds ways to entertain herself while she's got this limited mobility!
Mariam's surgery was a go! The doctors went in and removed a wedge of bone in her left leg which allowed them to set her leg to a new, straight angle! She's been all sewed and casted up now and the recovery process begins. Will you pray with us that she manages the inevitable pain well and heals fast?
This little sweetheart is here with us today and we are so happy! She was a bit shy introducing herself, but she almost instantly warmed up to us and loved being in front of the camera. There are some big plans to straighten out her left leg this week and we would really appreciate your prayers as we get started here.
