When Nafissa was just a young girl, one of her family chores was to help her older sister take the family's donkey to the well to fetch water for the day. The two of them often goofed around as sisters can be known to do. Well one day, the goofing around got a little too much and Nafissa was knocked off the donkey and ended up breaking her arm quite badly. With no medical care available in their area, a traditional healer in their village did his best to set Nafissa's arm, but it was mangled beyond the skills he possessed. In the years since then, Nafissa's arm has healed in an odd way with the most debilitating feature being the contracting of her hand. Nafissa can't open her hand or use her thumb. Her disability sets her apart from the rest of the kids in her village and makes her an easy target for cruel taunts and vicious whispers. Thankfully, a child in a nearby village was healed here at CURE Niger and, upon returning home, he mentioned how he had seen conditions similar to Nafissa's treated inside our doors. Daring to hope, Nafissa has made her here way to us where we were pleased to tell her that we can indeed treat her condition! It will be a process, but Nafissa will soon walk out of here tall, proud, and with two functioning hands!
With one last, giant smile, Nafissa got discharged! The doctors say she's out of the woods and can heal without supervision and from the comfort of her own home! We also got a chance to pray with her before she left which was pretty cool!
One day out of surgery and Nafissa is doing incredible! If she has any pain, she's not showing any sign of it. She also had a great chat with some of our spiritual staff today explaining how it's because of Jesus that we do what we do here at CURE Niger!
Nafissa's surgery was quick and painless (mostly because she was asleep for it all). The doctor, a visiting hand specialist plastic surgeon, was able to release her hand and get her all bandaged up with no complications. Our little lady is currently resting up in the ward!
