“I want to be able to walk like my mom when I am healed,” Hadiza tells us, with a quick glance to her mother. This statement is rewarded by a hearty laugh.

Hadiza was playing with some friends outside their school just one year ago. They had built a fire and were jumping over it, as kids seem to love to do. Everything was fun and fine until the hem of Hadiza’s dress got just a touch too close and burst into flames, quickly spreading up her dress. The rest of the children were frozen by Hadiza’s screams as she ran out into the street. A passing man noticed what was happening. He whipped out his knife and cut off Hadiza’s dress, most likely saving her life. Hadiza’s family rushed her to the hospital, but were turned away as they couldn’t afford the cost of treatment. With no other options, Hadiza was brought to their village’s traditional healer. The treatment she received did nothing to help her, and while she did eventually heal, her legs did so in a way that's permanently bent. Hadiza can no longer use her feet and waddles around on her knees. She is mocked by the other children in her village and wants nothing more than to be normal again. Thankfully, a woman in a nearby village had been treated by us here at CURE Niger and recommended that Hadiza come see us. Now that she is here, our medical team will treat her burns, release her legs, and allow her to stand on her own two feet for the first time in over a year!
