“We had brought him to a hospital, but the scarring was so bad. They did not treat him and we lost hope,” Mathias’ mother admits to us. Our little man was hurt in a bicycle accident a year ago that mangled his arm. The local hospital treated him, but his skin healed in a way that has it stretched in painful and inhibiting ways. Thankfully, some of our staff here at CURE Niger visited their village and told Mathias that we can treat his condition. Now that he is here in the hospital, we will treat his arm and send him home, uninhibited and free!
Mathias got to go home today! With his bandage off, he won't need to be back for a check up for a while so there's no reason for him not to go home and finish up the process there. We can't wait to see his progress when he comes back!
Mathias got a video get well message from the CUREU chapter at East Carolina University that we were able to show him! (We sneakily turned on our web cam to get his reaction)
Mathias was torn today. Part of him wanted to join in on the Valentine's Day crafts the rest of us were making. The other part of him want an introverted day with no one else around. The trade off was watching from a distance.
Mathias is a mama's boy through and through, although he's slowly getting comfortable enough here to branch out a little. During chapel this morning, he sat with another patient his age in a different row than his mom which is a pretty big deal for him! He also got a blue play-doh thumb courtesy of some visitors we had here to play with the kids!
So, if you haven't noticed, this is Mathias' photo face. When he sees us with the camera, he calls us over by shouting "photo! photo!" in our direction. When we put the camera up to our face, he always opens his eyes a little wider and leans into the lens. He's a strange, but wonderful child!
Mathias went back into surgery for a quick skin graft for a little spot where things weren't healing quite as they should. It was a nice and straight forward procedure and he's sleeping the drugs off in the ward now. You could tell this wasn't his first rodeo as he was a whole lot more relaxed in the ward and his singing was putting everyone else at ease.
We had a little Bible story and coloring time today. Our spiritual staff shared the story of the sick man being lowered through the roof to Jesus and then Mathias and his friends colored in a coloring page of the scene. Even Mathias' mom got into it!
