"Souraya was in Lomé (Togo) with her parents when the accident happened. I don't know exactly how, but I heard that it was with boiling water. When they came back in Tera, someone who had been healed at CURE advised us to go there," Fatima, Souraya's grandmother told us. Souraya has already gone through surgery here at CURE for her right hand and is now back for another procedure on her left hand so that she can have even more functionality on that side. Please join us in praying for Souraya's complete healing!
Our little lady's spirits are back to their soaring heights! She's recovering so well that the doctors have discharged her back to the patient guest house where she'll hang out as she starts her bandage change regimen!
So the plan for the surgery is to separate the three rightmost fingers on Souraya's right hand. When she's done with this step, she'll be able to move each finger independently for the first time since she was burned!
Our little lady had her follow up appointment today. The doctors are pleased with the way things are coming together, but they're asking Souraya to stay a little longer so a specialist can take a look at her wrist next week!
Souraya is back with us! She's got her follow up appointment later this week, but came early because that's when she could get a lift! She'll be staying in the guest house and hanging out with us until then!
Souraya saw the doctors again today and they told her that she can go home! She has some exercises to do at home in order to keep improving the flexibility of her hand! Her grandmother is currently making arrangements to get home and they'll most likely be here for a few more days, but Souraya is excited!
Today's toy of choice is an old coke bottle half filled with water. Souraya was in tears when one of the other kids took it and dumped the water out. Luckily, it turned out to be easily refillable and that was enough to stop the tears!
Every day that Souraya has a physical therapy session she always dresses up in this nice dress and puts on her nice sandals to look her best for the session. As soon as it's done, she changes back into her play clothes and proceeds to get nice and dirty!
Souraya was playing the role of the little helper today in picking up lunch from the cafeteria and bringing it back to the house. She's not yet at the point where she can balance it freely on her head, but she's getting there!
Souraya got her bandage off today! Her hand still has some serious work that needs to be done, but is already much more functional than it was before this surgery. The doctors and social workers are working with her grandmother to figure out the next steps we'll all take towards her being completely healed!
After joining us in chapel every morning, it's back to the guest house for Souraya and her grandmother as the bonds they're making with the other caretakers and children provide the best entertainment around here!
We've been having a slew of visitors and Souraya's little extroverted self is absolutely loving it! Today she loved it so much that she forgot to each lunch and her grandmother had to track her down and force her to eat! She was initially crying that she had to leave everyone, but as soon as she got out of the room, she realized just how hungry she was and dove into her food!
Story time: There was a group of us playing in the playground. We were pushing a few of the kids on the swings while Souraya ran around. She ended up running too close behind one of the kids and got pegged by the swing. She ended up face-planting in the sand and getting a big mouthful of it. There was a quite a bit of crying and running back home for some grandmotherly comfort, but she's no worse for the wear and was back swinging with us not long after!
Souraya is just a bundle of energy this morning, running all over the place and she made up a game where she pets our shoes like they're dogs ... We're not too sure what was going on there, but we're happy to see her so happy!
Souraya was dragging her feet around the guesthouse this morning and missed the train over to our cafeteria for breakfast. Here you can see her running to keep up while shouting after everyone. She's always a source of entertainment for everyone around the hospital!
You'll notice that this photo is slightly out of focus. You'll also notice that the ice cream candy in Souraya's hand is in focus. As it was her focus at the moment, we tried to make it ours as well! But in all seriousness, we had some visitors stop by the hospital and spend some time playing, crafting, and eating treats with our patients. We all had a fantastic time!
Our little lady is back in high spirits and pumped to have her hand free (although it has to stay wrapped in a boxing glove like bandage for now). She got discharged from the ward and is back living in our guest house as she'll be getting regular dressing changes for the next while!
We just checked and Souraya is on the surgery list for Thursday of this week. If all goes well, she should have a hand not stuck in her stomach by Friday! There will still be some healing that will need to happen, but it'll go miles in the comfort department!
Our little lady is back in high spirits today and is heading back to her bed in the guesthouse! We talked to the doctors and she should be heading back into surgery next week in order to fully release her hand!
We had to have a talk with Souraya about keeping her wound clean and protected. Nothing bad has happened, just the way she was treating it was leaving it vulnerable to complications. Her grandmother understood and we should be all good! Please be praying for protection from infection and for continued healing.
Another day, another dressing change/wound cleaning. Everything seems to be coming along nicely! Please be praying that it continues this way and we can get this hand free and useful as soon as possible!
We were able to deliver a few get well messages to our little lady today. We're not sure she grasped what they were all saying as she just giggled throughout the whole ordeal, but the outpouring of love definitely moved Souraya's grandmother! Thank you all!
Souraya got her bandages changed today and was all smiles (or we're at least pretty sure you can call that facial expression a smile). Please be praying that the skin takes to her hand quickly and well so everything can progress as planned.
Souraya was technically discharged today, but since she lives far away and has a few more procedures coming up shortly (i.e. taking her hand out of her abdomen once the skin has grown onto it), she has just been transferred over to our long term patient lodging. It'll be a few weeks until she gets her next surgery, but she and her mom now have a bed and a place more comfortable than the ward to hang out in until the time comes!
Our little lady is feeling much better today. She's still figuring out how to go about life without the use of her left hand (only for the next month or so), but she's all smiles once again! Please be praying for her continued recovery.
Souraya's surgery yesterday went stunningly! Here you can see the medical staff comforting her as she was going under anesthesia. After she was asleep, the staff released the burns on the back of her hand that were forcing her hand into that claw-like position. Her hand was then sewn onto her stomach to cover the exposed bone and tendons and to let new skin grow onto her hand. In a few weeks, Souraya will have to go back into the OR in order to have her hand separated from her stomach again, along with her new skin!!! Praise the Lord for a successful procedure and the next step in her healing process.
We met Souraya and Fatima, her grandmother, last night when they arrived and knew immediately that we would be friends, she was full of smiles and waves for us! Please be praying for her as she was the first to go into surgery this morning. We can't wait to get to know her better and encourage her during her recovery. We will post photos from her surgery tomorrow!
