CURE in Niger

The picture above is of CURE in Niger. Everyone who serves with CURE in Niger, from medical professionals to office staff, are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical and spiritual care to people who, without CURE, couldn't find it and couldn't afford it, just like Souraya. To do that, we're inviting you to partner with us.

We need to raise approximately $1000 to treat children like Souraya. When you give a gift through Souraya's CUREkids profile, your contribution will help us continue our work in countries like Niger. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. You can choose to follow their updates and send them get well messages. That means that each year, you're a part of helping 12 different children, beginning with Souraya. We call it being a CURE Hero!

Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

"Souraya was in Lomé (Togo) with her parents when the accident happened. I don't know exactly how, but I heard that it was with boiling water. When they came back in Tera, someone who had been healed at CURE advised us to go there," Fatima, Souraya's grandmother told us. Souraya has already gone through surgery here at CURE for her right hand and is now back for another procedure on her left hand so that she can have even more functionality on that side. Please join us in praying for Souraya's complete healing!

Souraya was here once again for another bandage change. While she was waiting to be called, she had a visit from our spiritual staff (who she's paying attention to in the photo) who prayed for her and spent a little time playing with her! Photo of Souraya

Souraya came back for her first bandage change and wound cleaning which she handled like a professional! Check out that look on her face, she's not even paying attention to the bandage change. She came with her uncle this time, who she's staying with, as her grandmother is sick. If you could join us in praying for Souraya's grandmother, it would be much appreciated. Photo of Souraya

Our little Souraya ended up getting discharged over the weekend and we're sorry that we didn't manage to get a photo of her before she left. Unlike the last few times she's been with us, Souraya and her grandmother will be staying with some family friends in Niamey while she keeps coming back for bandage changes and wound cleanings!

Only one day after surgery and Souraya is already running all around the ward again. You can't keep this girl down! We love her energy and are amazed at her attitude when most kids are subdued and crying one day after surgery. Photo of Souraya

Souraya was feeling better about everything this morning after having yesterday to refamiliarize herself with the hospital and getting to read a bunch of your encouraging get well messages! She was still pretty afraid when it came time to get put to sleep, but she did great! The surgery itself went off without a hitch. The doctors able to release the burns pulling her fingers in towards her palm. When she heals up from this surgery, we'll be able to start separating her fingers! Photo of Souraya

Jul 31, 2018

Souraya is finally back to get some more surgery on her left hand (we mistakenly said right hand in our last status all the way back in January, but her right hand is all finished)! She's afraid for her upcoming surgery so we pulled out a little stuffed animal to calm her down and Balki, one of our spiritual staff members, spent some time with her this morning. Would you please be praying that God would help reassure Souraya as she gets ready for surgery? Photo of Souraya

Jan 10, 2018

We have a long term volunteer here with us that has taken on the big task of continuing education for the kids staying in our long term patient guest house. Today they worked on their french numbers and you can see Souraya in the blue. She wasn't the most attentive of students, but she was definitely excited about the personal blackboards that were distributed! Photo of Souraya

Dec 28, 2017

Souraya had her appointment with the doctor today! He's pleased with how she's healing up and says things are progressing just as planned. Her grandmother has been given the option and is deciding whether they'll head home for a bit before the next surgery or if they'll stick around a little longer. It's more of a marathon than a sprint with this little one, but we love having her around. Photo of Souraya

Souraya got herself discharged to the guest house today where she'll, once again, be hanging out as she goes through her bandage changing and wound cleaning regimen. Jul 05, 2017

Souraya is back for a check up! The doctors say her last skin graft has healed up incredibly well. The spot where they took the skin from her upper arm is still not completely healed, but it's nothing to be concerned about. With how good everything is going, we've begun talking about the next steps with Souraya's grandmother! Photo of Souraya

Souraya saw the doctors again today and they told her that she can go home! She has some exercises to do at home in order to keep improving the flexibility of her hand! Today's toy of choice is an old coke bottle half filled with water. Souraya was in tears when one of the other kids took it and dumped the water out. Luckily, it turned out to be easily refillable and that was enough to stop the tears! Photo of Souraya

Jan 18, 2017

We're still keeping up with the regularly scheduled bandage changes. We're slowly, but surely getting there! Photo of Souraya

Jan 17, 2017

Souraya was all sorts of excited to visit some of her friends in the ward today! Photo of Souraya

Jan 12, 2017

We've been having a slew of visitors and Souraya's little extroverted self is absolutely loving it! Today she loved it so much that she forgot to each lunch and her grandmother had to track her down and force her to eat! She was initially crying that she had to leave everyone, but as soon as she got out of the room, she realized just how hungry she was and dove into her food! Photo of Souraya

Jan 11, 2017

Souraya got a little bit antsy in chapel this morning! Photo of Souraya

Jan 10, 2017

Story time: There was a group of us playing in the playground. We were pushing a few of the kids on the swings while Souraya ran around. She ended up running too close behind one of the kids and got pegged by the swing. She ended up face-planting in the sand and getting a big mouthful of it. There was a quite a bit of crying and running back home for some grandmotherly comfort, but she's no worse for the wear and was back swinging with us not long after! Photo of Souraya

Jan 06, 2017

Souraya's early morning ritual is to wait outside the bandage changing room for her almost daily bandage change. She has her preferred spot and everything! Photo of Souraya

Jan 05, 2017

Souraya spent this morning visiting some of our other patients in the ward! Photo of Souraya

Jan 04, 2017

Souraya is just a bundle of energy this morning, running all over the place and she made up a game where she pets our shoes like they're dogs ... We're not too sure what was going on there, but we're happy to see her so happy! Photo of Souraya

Jan 02, 2017

A good dressing change is a great way to bring in the new year as it means we're getting closer to being all healed up! Photo of Souraya

Dec 27, 2016

Our little lady enjoys a laugh with some of her new made friends. Photo of Souraya

Dec 23, 2016

Souraya was dragging her feet around the guesthouse this morning and missed the train over to our cafeteria for breakfast. Here you can see her running to keep up while shouting after everyone. She's always a source of entertainment for everyone around the hospital! Photo of Souraya

Dec 21, 2016

You'll notice that this photo is slightly out of focus. You'll also notice that the ice cream candy in Souraya's hand is in focus. As it was her focus at the moment, we tried to make it ours as well! But in all seriousness, we had some visitors stop by the hospital and spend some time playing, crafting, and eating treats with our patients. We all had a fantastic time! Photo of Souraya

Dec 19, 2016

Yup, not a doubt left in our minds that Souraya is completely back to herself! Photo of Souraya

Dec 16, 2016

Our little lady is back in high spirits and pumped to have her hand free (although it has to stay wrapped in a boxing glove like bandage for now). She got discharged from the ward and is back living in our guest house as she'll be getting regular dressing changes for the next while! Photo of Souraya

Dec 15, 2016

As planned, Souraya went in for surgery today and had the rest of her hand removed from her abdomen! Everything went smoothly and she's sleeping the anesthesia off in the ward! Photo of Souraya

Dec 13, 2016

We just checked and Souraya is on the surgery list for Thursday of this week. If all goes well, she should have a hand not stuck in her stomach by Friday! There will still be some healing that will need to happen, but it'll go miles in the comfort department! Photo of Souraya

Dec 08, 2016

Our little lady is back in high spirits today and is heading back to her bed in the guesthouse! We talked to the doctors and she should be heading back into surgery next week in order to fully release her hand! Photo of Souraya

Dec 07, 2016

Souraya went back in to surgery today. She had part of the skin holding her hand to her abdomen severed in order to allow it to start taking to her hand better! Photo of Souraya

Dec 06, 2016

We had to have a talk with Souraya about keeping her wound clean and protected. Nothing bad has happened, just the way she was treating it was leaving it vulnerable to complications. Her grandmother understood and we should be all good! Please be praying for protection from infection and for continued healing. Photo of Souraya

Dec 05, 2016

Another day, another dressing change/wound cleaning. Everything seems to be coming along nicely! Please be praying that it continues this way and we can get this hand free and useful as soon as possible! Photo of Souraya

Dec 01, 2016

We were able to deliver a few get well messages to our little lady today. We're not sure she grasped what they were all saying as she just giggled throughout the whole ordeal, but the outpouring of love definitely moved Souraya's grandmother! Thank you all!

Nov 28, 2016

Souraya got her bandages changed today and was all smiles (or we're at least pretty sure you can call that facial expression a smile). Please be praying that the skin takes to her hand quickly and well so everything can progress as planned. Photo of Souraya

Nov 25, 2016

Souraya was technically discharged today, but since she lives far away and has a few more procedures coming up shortly (i.e. taking her hand out of her abdomen once the skin has grown onto it), she has just been transferred over to our long term patient lodging. It'll be a few weeks until she gets her next surgery, but she and her mom now have a bed and a place more comfortable than the ward to hang out in until the time comes! Photo of Souraya

Nov 24, 2016

Souraya is fully back to her joyful little self. She's still sticking to her bed, but we expect her to being running around the place soon! Photo of Souraya

Nov 23, 2016

Our little lady is feeling much better today. She's still figuring out how to go about life without the use of her left hand (only for the next month or so), but she's all smiles once again! Please be praying for her continued recovery. Photo of Souraya

Nov 22, 2016

Souraya's surgery yesterday went stunningly! Here you can see the medical staff comforting her as she was going under anesthesia. After she was asleep, the staff released the burns on the back of her hand that were forcing her hand into that claw-like position. Her hand was then sewn onto her stomach to cover the exposed bone and tendons and to let new skin grow onto her hand. In a few weeks, Souraya will have to go back into the OR in order to have her hand separated from her stomach again, along with her new skin!!! Praise the Lord for a successful procedure and the next step in her healing process. Photo of Souraya

Nov 21, 2016

We met Souraya and Fatima, her grandmother, last night when they arrived and knew immediately that we would be friends, she was full of smiles and waves for us! Please be praying for her as she was the first to go into surgery this morning. We can't wait to get to know her better and encourage her during her recovery. We will post photos from her surgery tomorrow! Photo of Souraya
