"Sometimes I don't go to school because the pain is so bad, but I like not going because then I don't get laughed at by other students. My granny tells me every time I feel pain that one day I will be healed. But there are so many times I do not believe her," Marrium confides in us.
Marrium is here at CURE Malawi seeking treatment for her bowed leg. "When my granddaughter started school, a few weeks later, I noticed that her left leg was not a straight as the other one. I did not bother to take her to the hospital thinking it will correct by itself," Marrium's grandmother Hawa remembers. Trusting that things will sort themselves out, Marrium has never been treated and she now feels a lot of pain when she walks. Eventually the pain and mocking led to her dropping out of school.
One day when Marrium was walking with friends, a stranger stopped her. He asked her to take him to her parents. It was a weird request, but something led Marrium to trust this man. It turns out he was from the local hospital and he told Hawa about us here at CURE Malawi. God works in strange ways sometimes. Thankfully Marrium and Hawa heeded this mans advice and are now here and being scheduled for surgery! Please keep this young woman in your prayers as she starts on this grand adventure!
Marrium is going home! After she had her backslab fitted and became comfortable with it, our CURE Malawi doctors said there's no reason she needs to stay! We will see her again in the second week of June. Please keep her in your prayers as Marrium has a long journey back home.
"I would have never reached this far in my healing if it was not for you all praying and supporting my operations," said Marrium. Marrium is so happy to have made it through all the difficulties of the past few months. Her doctors reviewed her today and put her leg on a back slab cast (a half cast that only covers the back of her leg and is bound to her leg with bandages - the back slab provides support while also allowing her leg some freedom). Marrium is so happy and full of joy with this progress! Thank you so much for your prayers and support!
Marrium has swung back by CURE Malawi for her follow up appointment! Since she's had to travel such a long way, she's been admitted to the ward and she'll be getting her cast off tomorrow so the doctors can get a look in there to see how she's healing up.
Marrium is finally going home! Bedore she left we got to share with her all the get well messages you all have been sending to her and she loves it so much! Marrium is leaving with a cast on so she'll be back in a few weeks to have it checked out. On a special note, we would like to extend the smiles that both Marrium and her Granny have to thank you for your support and prayers that you offered! As Marrium returns to her home, please pray for a safe road trip and quick recovery!
It's a time for celebration! Marrium got the official work that she's heading home tomorrow! She's formed such a bond with the doctors over her time here that they bought her a cake to celebrate! Marrium is super happy with this news and she doesn't mind the cake either. Your prayers and support have made this day in Marrium's life possible. Thank you for being a hero for her!
Back in the ward after her wound check and Marrium is already making friends with another CUREkid Zainab! The doctors said Marrium's wound is healing up even better than they had expected. There's been no official word yet on whether she can go home or not, but we're praying! Thank you so much for your prayers and support!
Marrium's operation went really well! Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Today, Marrium has another wound check and, depending on how that goes, she might be able to go home soon! Our doctors are going to tell us how she is and we will keep you posted. Please continue to pray for our children who come through CURE hospitals for this time where locking down of public transportation is really making it hard for them to come.
Marrium is having her surgery as we speak! As we mentioned before, the surgeons are grating a small part of her muscle to her wound which will help close it up. It's not a large surgery, but prayers are always needed!
This coming Friday, Marrium is scheduled to have her operation! Today she was hanging out with the OR team and had lots of questions for them. We are so grateful for their patience in answering as well as your support and prayers for Marrium!
Today Marrium slept in until lunchtime! She just now woke up and was super hungry! Her wound is getting better and the doctors say Marrium might be able to have her last operation this week! They need to graft a small part of her muscle to close up her wound. Please keep her in your prayers!
Marrium's bed looks like a rainbow! She has a blanket that has almost all colors from the rainbow. Her wound check and vacuum installation went really well; thank you so much for your prayers and support! While not fun to be stuck in bed again, at least the blanket and balloons help make it at least look fun!
Marrium's operation is going so well. The doctors said that she would need to have a vac that will help clean out her wound. Even though Marrium does not like the vac, it is important that she has this on her leg. Marrium will still be here in the hospital and she will need all the support and prayers from all of you! We believe that her healing will be a life-transforming experience!
Good Morning from Marrium! Today, Marrium is going to have her wound checked in the OR. It will be a quick visit since it’s only a minor procedure. Our doctors think that it’s best to check Marrium’s wound while she’s asleep in the OR, so that she doesn't feel much pain. Please remember Marrium in your prayers!
"My doctor said that this might be one of the few procedures that I have to undergo in the OR!" Marrium is going in the OR this morning and she is super excited! We are always so grateful for your prayers and support—this makes Marrium a super girl! Please continue to pray for her operation this morning. The doctor will be checking her wound to see if they need to do anything before she goes home!
"I am feeling EXCITED!" said Marrium. Today has been an awesome day for this awesome girl. Marrium is doing really great and her doctor said she can start doing physical therapy! We cannot want to see her walk and ready to be going home soon to see her family! Your support and prayers are making life change forever in Marrium's life!
Marrium is going to the OR again. The doctor said she needs to have her vacuum installed for a few more days. Her wound is healing up well and this will make sure it continues that way. Marrium is not happy about this development as it means she'll be stuck in bed again for a bit, but she understands the importance. Please continue to pray for her.
Marrium is out of bed and all over the ward! She told us that when she was unable to move out of bed, she had all her friends coming to her to keep her company and now it is her time to visit them! Despite having her new coloring book, Marrium said she will keep it for later and spend some time with her friends in the ward. Tomorrow the doctors will check her wound in the OR while she is asleep. Please keep praying for her!
"I miss coloring. I still have crayons, but my pages are finished," Marrium reminded us about the book we owe her. Today, we are going to get the book for her no matter what! To see kids loving the arts and finding joy really encourages us. Please continue to pray as Marrium is still here for the doctors to check her wound again next week.
"Thandy, my book is full can I have another one?" This is the question Storyteller Thandy faces each time he visits Marrium. At this moment, Marrium is not allowed to move around to give her leg the rest it needs to heal up. Because of this, Marrium is glued to bed and we are trying our best to keep her distracted from being bored and in pain. The doctors said Marrium is getting much better and hopefully soon she will be able to move around again!
Marrium has made more friends who she has been sharing her coloring supplies with! We're not sure which she loves more, coloring or sharing! We tried to introduce to her new crafts like making cards, but she prefers coloring her flowers and we love what she makes! It is so pretty! We just need to get more books for her and crayons. Medically, her wound is doing so much better. Thank you so much for your prayers and support!
Marrium is feeling down today but she still shared her best smile. She had her vacuum and bandages changed in a nice, simple procedure and it's still doing it's job, sucking up all the dead and infected cells! Kind of gross, but also super important!
Marrium continues to get so much better! This morning our medical team encouraged Marrium to keep her leg elevated so that it does not swell up. On Monday, Marrium will have another vacuum change. Please continue to pray for Marrium and her mother as she there is a lot going on at the moment!
Marrium has not been able to leave her bed due to the vacuum that she is attached to (seen on the right side of this photo). However, she has been having tons of fun coloring! Today we had to provide her with more crayons and a new book to work on as she blew through the last set. Our doctors said they will soon have to change the bandages on her leg and they're going to take her into the OR to do in order not to cause her too much pain. Please continue praying for sweet Marrium!
Marrium has a medical vacuum attached to her leg now. This will help to suck out the dead cells which would have caused more pain and furthered infected. Please continue to pray for her. Today Marrium has been working on her coloring and her mom was so impressed with how her daughter finds joy and hope in arts! Our Spiritual team provided Marrium with the coloring books and crayons to help keep her busy and not focused on her leg.
Today Marrium is going to OR to have a small procedure done on her leg. The doctors have noticed that her surgical wound is too "wet" so they're going to drain it. As you might expect, Marrium is not too happy about this, but we know it is the best for her so that her leg heals well. Please pray for her as this all goes down!
Selfie time! Marrium loves taking photos with her friends and today she took so many, she ran out of space on her mother's phone. She's feeling a whole lot better now that she has the back-slab cast on. Thank you for taking the time to pray for her!
Marrium trip to the OR went well. The doctors had a look around and everything was as it should be. They cleaned her surgical site and then put a back-slab cast on Marrium's leg. Basically this is a plaster brace made for the back of Marrium's leg that uses bandages to bind her leg to the brace. This just allows space for Marrium's leg to expand and shrink as it swells a little bit during the healing process!
Thank you so much for your prayers! Marrium will need more encouragement and prayers today as she is going to the OR again. The doctors noticed some abnormalities inside her cast and they need to check her surgical wound. The problems started last night as Marrium wasn't sleeping well and her pain was increasing which is very unusual. Thankfully she's here at CURE Malawi where we can check what is going on right away!
Marrium's operation was successfully done! We are so grateful for the prayers and support you have offered. Marrium is on full bed rest with her newly straight left leg! Please continue to pray for her as sleep is proving difficult as she adjusts to having her leg in a giant cast.
Great news! Marrium's fever went down and her sickness cleared up last night so she is going in for surgery today! The doctors are going to straighten her leg right out and while it's exciting, you can see on her face she is pretty nervous. Please join us in praying for strength for Marrium and wisdom for the surgeons.
Today Marrium started to explore the hospital a little and found the playroom! She got to join some of the other patients and caretakers in some playtime and educational lessons. On the medical front, Marrium has a slight fever which is delaying her surgery. The doctors say she can have her surgery as soon as her fever goes down and this little sickness clears up! Please join us in praying this happens soon.
