“I feel like dropping out of school every time I get laughed at. I find it really hard to accept the deformed foot I have because of the feeling of rejection I face” Dorika tells us. Dorika is here at CURE Malawi to have a burn that healed wrong treated on her right foot. She was burned when she was just six months old. Her mother Angela was outside washing when Dorika was left in this house with the lamp placed by the table. Little Dorika managed to tug on the table cloth the lamp was on, accidentally pulling the lamp onto herself and burning her foot. Angela took her daughter to the hospital that night and Dorika was helped as much as they could. A few weeks later, her foot refused to heal properly and she developed contractures, or melted skin inhibiting movement. Dorika feels both physical and emotional pain when she walks. Many times she does not go to school due to shame.
“When I heard about CURE, I had this peace that these people might help my daughter. I went and attend the mobile clinic when the CURE Malawi doctors came to my home village,” Angela recalls joyfully. Now that Angela and Dorika are here, Dorika will undergo an operation to release the burn contractures on her foot and set her free!
It is another great day because Dorika is going home! Her mother has mastered the dressing change routine and she is confident that she can do it at home! The nurses gave Dorika enough bandages to keep up with everything until they come back. Please continue to pray that Dorika's foot does not get infected and that she heals smoothly!
Dorika had her wound cleaning today in the dressing room. Our nurse was teaching Dorika's mother to clean and change bandages in case Dorika goes home and she needs to change the bandages herself. Dorika's wound is so much better now and it is healing so well! Thank you so much for your prayers and support! Dorika will soon be able to put on some shoes and walk with no shame! Her healing is a huge part of your support in prayers and materials!
On ward rounds this morning, our doctors officially declared Dorika infection free! Thank you all so much for your prayers which helped get Dorika to this point. Now that she's infection free, her mom is beginning to arrange transportation plans to get them home!
Dorika is back at CURE Malawi! The doctors found her wound had gotten infected so they re-admitted her to keep a close eye on things. Dorika should just need to be here for a few days and then she can go home again. Please pray that we're able to get this infection cleaned up fast!
The game "Bao" can keep the kids busy for hours playing and having fun. Bao is a traditional Malawian board game and has helped Dorika develop a new friendship with fellow patient Alisina! Alisina is from Mozambique, but she's learned some Chichewa (Malawi's local language) and it's enough to start this friendship! Dorika will start physical therapy this week and by the end of this week, she might be going home! Please pray for smooth exercises!
Dorika had a successful operation to release the burn skin inhibiting her foot! Thank you so much for your prayers and support! Dorika's foot is fixed and she is in bed resting for a few days before she starts her physical therapy. Please keep her in your prayers as she is healing up!
