Jenifer's Story

“She will have a bright future. She will be able to use her hands for her studies and if she doesn’t study, she will still be able to use her hands and her future will still be bright,” says Timothy, Jenifer’s father, when we asked him the hopes he has for his daughter after treatment at CURE Malawi.

Jenifer accidentally burned her hand by placing it in boiling water around a year ago. Her family has been seeking help for healing ever since. They first visited an outreach clinic, who then sent them to the local hospital in Lilongwe. The local hospital referred them to CURE Malawi. It has not been an easy journey, but they have had great support in their community.

"We did not expect the help and assistance given by the people in our community. We are very grateful,” Timothy told us it has been very hard financially because he does not have a job. The people in his community have helped not only to seek assistance, but also to bathe and feed Jenifer.

Jenifer struggles with her friends because they do not understand how her hand can be so different than it was before. They often laugh and make fun of Jenifer’s hand, but playing with her friends is still one of Jenifer’s favorite activities.

Timothy told us he is very proud of his daughter because she is only five years old and speaks great English. She is doing very well in school and he asks for prayers over her life and health during this time. Please join us in praying for Jenifer as she will soon be having surgery to begin the process of releasing her fingers and healing her hand!

Jenifer has been discharged! Her bags were packed early this morning and she had her chitenge fabric tied around her neck like a cape, ready to take off! The doctors told Jenifer she will need to go to her local hospital in two weeks for a small after care procedure. We plan on seeing silly little Jenifer again at our mobile clinic near her home in September! Please keep her in your prayers while she heals at home! Photo of Jenifer

Jenifer has finally come out of her shell and is one of the funniest kids in the ward! Yesterday, she hung out with all the boys in the playroom throwing the soccer ball around and today she's been in both the playroom and outside on the swings. While on the swings this morning, her mom called her to ward rounds, where Dr. Lubega scheduled her wound inspection in the operating room for next Tuesday. She was the first patient seen and after the doctors moved to the next bed, she asked her mom if she could go play again. For thirty minutes, all anyone could hear was Jenifer saying, "higher! higher!" Jenifer LOVES the swings and the playroom and is enjoying her time at the hospital. Please keep Jenifer in your prayers as she prepares for her wound inspection next week and that she has a great weekend ahead! Photo of Jenifer

Jenifer's smile is starting to get a little brighter again! She still isn't sure how to handle smiling while having her picture taken, but one day at a time. Jenifer is in a little pain from yesterday's operation, but says she'll be going to the playroom today regardless. The doctors plan for Jenifer to having a wound inspection next Monday in the OR and have advised her to keep her hand elevated. Thanks for keeping Jenifer in your prayers while she's with us here at the hospital! Photo of Jenifer

It's been almost a year, but guess who's back?! Our friend Jenifer! We really missed this spunky girl! It's been quite some time since Jenifer has last been in the hospital, so she's a bit quiet today. We're sure this silly girl will come back out of her shell very soon. Jenifer will be going into the operating room for another release of some burns on her right hand. Please keep her in your prayers as she undergoes surgery and that she has a smooth recovery! Jenifer gave us a thumbs up before going into the operating room today! She had an eventful evening yesterday popping every balloon she could find that the volunteers brought for the children at CURE Malawi. Her energy continued as she prepared for surgery today! The surgeons will be detaching Jenifer’s hand from her abdominal flap. Jenifer and her mom, Mphatso, are both very excited for this operation. Her mom asks for prayers of healing over Jenifer’s hand! Jenifer and her new friend Febe were first in line to the playroom this morning! They were each given a teddy bear and began to spin down the hallway dancing in circles. Jenifer will be going into surgery tomorrow! The doctors took a look at her abdominal flap this morning and it is looking well! Tomorrow the surgeons will detach her hand and Jenifer will begin taking the next steps in her healing process. Please pray for Jenifer's surgery and for God to continue healing Jenifer's hand!
