“Evelista is a beautiful daughter that God has blessed me with. I’m so happy to have such a charming and wonderful girl for a daughter. However, Evelista's legs are bowed. This has brought sadness in my life. Her friends laugh at her, and at times she would come home crying. This was really heart-breaking, but being a mother, I encouraged her not to worry. Even though I encouraged her, I never knew where to go or what to do with her condition until one day I met a friend who told me about CURE and what it does. I then decided to bring her here at CURE for help. I am so happy that I was received very well because I was afraid that I would be sent back since I just came straight without being referred by any hospital. My heart is now at peace knowing that I’m at the right place where my daughter will be healed and will no longer be laughed at. I have a great confidence in me that the devil will be put to shame because after operation, I know my child will be normal like any other person. I can say this because I have seen more conditions worse than my daughter’s being treated here at CURE and I don’t see any reason why my own should be different. Above all, I am so glad and happy with the doctor’s kindness, love, care and respect they have. I have never seen such doctors in many of the hospitals here. It’s my prayer that they will continue being so loving and caring because these are the most important things that patients wish to receive from people around them and it’s helpful in speeding up their recovery. May the good Lord bless CURE hospital with all that it needs to keep on providing free services to our poor children,” Elita, Evelista’s mother said with gratitude.
Evelista stopped in today for her physio session and to collect all of her pictures throughout her healing journey during her time here at CURE Malawi! Her dad came with her today and was cheering Evelista on while she was posing for her after photos. We are so happy to see her walking with her straight legs! Evelista will be back again on October 12th. Thank you for your constant prayers as Evelista continues her physio sessions!
Evelista has improved significantly and is able to walk with only a little bit of limping! Our Rehab Technician Diana, has finally weaned her off her crutches! Today she was able to climb up and down the stairs a couple of times. She also had to put one leg in front of the other on a straight line without putting much effort on herself! Her mom, Elita, says she has been assisting Evelista with physical therapy at home because she doesn't want her to have any problems walking. Thank you for praying for Evelista during her journey of healing!
“Here is our plan for Evelista, we would like to completely wean her off crutches. Then we are satisfied that she is able to walk on her own,” says Diana, our Rehabilitation Technician. Evelista is progressing well and today she came with her mom, Elita. Evelista had a joint physiotherapy session with her friend Esther without their crutches! After observing that Evelista is still limping a lot, the physio team have decided to prolong the review days because she is not yet ready. Please continue praying for Evelista as her therapy sessions continue!
Evelista came in for physical therapy today, she is doing very well! The physio team says her leg muscle is strengthening nicely. She is currently using two crutches to assist her walking, but they have advised her to start to use just one, unless it is a really long distance. Evelista will be back for more physical therapy next Friday and the team hopes to get her off of both crutches! Please continue to keep Evelista in your prayers as she gets closer to fully walking!
Evelista is in for another check-up and x-ray and things are looking well! When we asked her what her favorite thing to do at home has been, she told us, "I like to pick the fabric to place on the furniture, especially the chairs! My favorite color is white! Lots of white!" She went on to tell us she wants to be a nurse when she grows up because she likes their uniforms! She says when she is a nurse, her uniform will definitely be white! Please join us in praying for Evelista's continued healing!
Evelista came in for a checkup today! Unfortunately, her cast wasn't ready to be taken off last month when she came, but apparently Evelista HAS written her exams this week, she says, "They went well, I hope to pass. You can pray my social studies course went well." Please also pray her leg is all set to have the cast off now. Either way, we'll see her again in 4 weeks!
Evelista is back for her cast off and her shoe raise! She came with her mother and her 15-year-old brother Wisdom. We asked her and she says she doesn't play with Wisdom but she does play with her little two year old friend Sasha. "I'm excited to go back to school after my cast is off!" Please pray she can get back to it soon!
Evelista went home yesterday afternoon! She's doing well and just had her cast reinforced - and now it matches her shirt! She'll be back June 25th to have her cast off and a shoe raise. Please continue praying for her!
Evelista's surgery on Monday went well! Dr. Maina did an operation called a double-elevation osteotomy, which involves cutting the bones to make them straight, cutting a wedge right under the knee and lifting it up to make it straight, as well as putting bone graft in. Unfortunately, she will have a leg-length discrepancy and will most likely have a frame in the future to lengthen her leg so they're both the same. In the meantime, she'll have a shoe raise after her leg heals in a couple weeks!
Evelista is back! It looks as if her 8-plates weren't doing the job so Dr. Maina is having another go at it. This time she'll get a surgery to make the leg straight instead of relying on guided-growth techniques. Please pray for her as she has her operation today!
Evelista has come in for some more physiotherapy! She'll be coming in April 2nd to have a checkup with her doctors - her left leg still looks a bit off so she might need another operation. Please be praying for her!
Evelista came in for a checkup today! "My daughter is now healed, she is now able to play with her friends and run, unlike before when she used to complain about her legs hurting. But since we were discharged from here, she can even ride a bicycle! I am so happy because the doctors have told me that she is responding well to the medicine and growth plates and her bone is now becoming straight. We will come for a check up next year in April for an X-ray, I believe she will be healed by then," says Elita, Evalista’s mom.
Evelista's back and we're loving her outfit today, she's always so fashionable! She doesn't have any pain and says she's able to do almost everything. She's really positive and dedicated to her exercises which helps with quick healing! Your prayers are helping too!
Evelista's here for a checkup! We'll see her again at clinic on September 25th for another check in with the doctors, but otherwise she looks like she's doing well. We'll probably see her a lot earlier than that for more physiotherapy though, since she keeps dropping in!
Evelista's back for some physiotherapy and will be here again on May 31st for some more! CUREkids Coordinator Funny asked her how she was doing and she just smiled really big! After some coaxing, she said sometimes she has pain, sometimes not - she slept on her leg wrong and had some pain after that but now it's better!
Evelista has been discharged! She's doing well with her physiotherapy and will be back in June for an X-ray to make sure everything's growing well! Please be praying for her as her leg starts to grow straight!
Evelista's surgery yesterday went well! Drs. Kyle, Christine and Karolina went in and did some soft tissue releases and put in some plates that will help slowly guide the bone into place while she grows - they stop the growth plate on one side so that the other can catch up, swinging around to make the leg straight. Please be praying for her while she heals! Hopefully, she will be able to go home Friday after some physiotherapy!
Meet Evelista (R), her friend Fabiola and one of the moms! Evelista's a sweet girl with Blounts disease and a lovely hairdo! She'll be having surgery later today for her legs, please be praying for her! She's been in and out of the hospital for a while because we needed to take an MRI of her knee to rule out some things, but now she's finally having her operation!
