“Sometimes we ask ourselves on how Lufina got deformed. I still do not know what caused Lufina my granddaughter to have patella condition. Forgetting the cause, we are now focusing on getting Lufina treated. Lufina’s mother is expecting a baby so I had to come here and get this little precious daughter helped. We met CURE doctors at our local hospital back home and from there, Lufina was booked to undergo a surgery. There are two children in her family and Lufina is the last born. What worries us as parents to see Lufina in this condition is that she keeps falling when she runs. With that, Lufina cannot continue her grade two. She had to be dropped out in order to seek help to get her treated, then she will be able to go back school. I am so happy that my granddaughter is one of the children that will have an operation. Thank you to all who have made it possible to get us this far, I believe Lufina will be well,” Marriam, Lufina's grandmother told us with a smile. Join us in praying for Lufina's upcoming surgery and healing, we're excited to see her progress so that she can get back to being a healthy kid in grade two!
Lufina's back for a checkup and a day of physiotherapy. She's already back to entertaining us and playing with her friend Faith, who has been here at the hospital since she came in June! She'll go home early tomorrow morning and since she's all set with operations, we probably won't see her again except for yearly checkups at her local clinic! Please be praying for her and her family as she goes back to school next month and as she continues to grow. Her mom is so happy, no complications and no complaints! Thank you for being a part of what God has done in Lufina's life!
Lufina's gotten the go-ahead to go home! As a special treat we managed to upload a video we took with her on Friday - she's in a similar mood today - as always! She'll be back in August for some more physiotherapy. Please pray for a safe trip home and continued healing! https://youtu.be/Go14tvGx0F8
Lufina is still running around giggling - partially because we tickle her because it makes her laugh so hard! We're thinking she might be going home over the weekend - but she might be back for more physio after that. We'll find out on Monday what the story is, but if she leaves we'll really miss her!
Our lovely Lufina is doing so good with her physiotherapy that she might be able to go home tomorrow! As you can see, she's already an expert at putting her leg brace on! We're gonna miss her giggles so much!
Lufina was chasing us all around today - squeezing our fingers (as she's doing in this photo where Thandy was reading her some get-well messages). One of her well-wishers sent a photo of a dog and asked her to nickname it - she decided to go with "Phoney". We're not sure why - we asked and she didn't tell us. She and her mom really appreciate the messages and prayers!
Our spirited Lufina was pretending to be shy today! She's doing lots of physiotherapy, so we see her a lot upstairs in the physio room - although most of the time it looks like she's playing with the toys and not really doing her workouts!
Lufina seems to already be fully recovered from her surgery - in terms of her attitude at least! She's already laughing and giggling again although she's walking around with a stiff leg we're sure the physios will get her bending it again in no time!
Lufina's surgery yesterday went well, and although she's in a bit of pain this morning, she's already making funny faces at CUREkids Coordintator Avanell! Dr. Sam and Dr. Hilary released the tight muscle that was pulling her patella out of place and then 'tethered' it to the other side of her knee with a muscle from the opposite side. Please be praying for Lufina as she heals and starts up with more physiotherapy!
A visiting church group came to make a donation so Lufina was sitting in bed 'listening' to the pastor teaching them - she was a bit distracted by the camera and was making funny faces, so we had to go away so she'd pay attention! We get this silly face ALL the time though!
Lufina dropped by Shakira's bed today to amuse her! Shakira had a wound inspection this morning and is confined to the recovery bay for now, so we're sure she enjoyed Lufina's company! It's hard to NOT enjoy Lufina's company!
Lufina was having a lot of fun outside today - when she saw we were taking her photo she started laughing and dancing! Little did she know we were taking video! She thought it was hilarious when she saw it! She has a little bit of an infection on her knee - not a big deal, but we're going to put her on some antibiotics to make sure it's all good before her next operation. Additionally, she has malaria (which as you can see isn't really affecting her) and is on treatment to get that sorted before surgery, so we're planning on her surgery being next week. https://youtu.be/n0DX7PzZTcg
Guess who's back! Lufina! She's here for her next knee operation and is already running about giggling and making new friends, including our new CUREkid, Faith. She'll be having her operation later this week, so please be praying for her!
This girl's laugh is the best! Lufina was playing bao with her mom this morning and was giggling nonstop... especially when we started tickling her! She is so happy and has been "running" all over the hospital!
Lufina's wearing a pretty great turban today while playing cards! She tried to convince Yahaya to smile with her, but not everyone has quite the same level of enthusiasm after the 30th time having their photo taken! Lufina doesn't look like she'll ever get tired of it though!
Early this morning, Lufina and the rest of the gang were already outside enjoying fresh air and a game of cards! She's doing well and will be continuing physiotherapy. We wanted to give you all a hint of what her laugh is like - it's quite infectious - and tried uploading this video of her, Eluby and Witness in the physio department but our internet was too slow! Fortunately today it was a lot better so you guys get to smile with her! YouTube link is at https://youtu.be/w6u3NfDL2qY.
Lufina's been BUSY today! In the morning we found her playing cards with Luiza, Patsani, and Cosmas! Then she had some physiotherapy in bed with one of the physiotherapy students, and then we found her playing with Eluby and Witness in the physio department and brought her some get-well messages! She says she feels a bit of pain when doing physio, but apart from that, she loves playing on the bike and has been enjoying every minute of being in the hospital!
Lufina's making friends already! She was having fun playing with Chisomo, who also has knee braces, this morning during teatime! Her lovely smile and giggle is coming out too, a far cry from the frown we got her first day here!
Lufina's surgery yesterday went really well! This morning during ward rounds, she was smiling so big and Dr. Maina said, "Smiling! The day after surgery?! That's a good sign!" Yesterday they did an operation on her left knee to keep her patella (kneecap) aligned correctly, using tendons to anchor it in place. Please be praying for her while she heals! She'll have to keep that knee still for two weeks before she can start doing some intense physiotherapy!
Lufina's waiting for her operation this morning! Unfortunately, she's one of the last kids on the theater list because she's a bit older and her surgery will be long, so she's going to be waiting for a while! Please be praying that her operation goes smoothly, we'll post more details tomorrow.
Meet Lufina! Lufina is a cute little girl with dislocating patellas (kneecaps). It keeps her from running and walking well, so she'll be having multiple surgeries to fix them and get them to stay in place! She'll have her first surgery on one of her knees tomorrow, please be praying for her!
