You know I never realized until hearing seven-year-old Mayamiko's story, that having clubbed feet affects not only the function of the feet, but the entire leg. Obviously Mayamiko experiences an enormous amount of difficulty walking and playing like all the other seven-year-olds, but she also has a tough time with her knees. She can hardly bend her knees because of the misalignment of her feet, which makes using the restroom especially challenging. Mayamiko’s clubfeet come with an even greater cost, her education. She has to be escorted to and from school because the journey is too long for her to be able to make it on her own, but if her parents are unavailable, she simply doesn’t go. She has missed a lot of school because of those feet. So I say it’s high time they are fixed, so she can attend school regularly and so the rest of her legs can function properly.
Mayamiko's frame removal went well, and they didn't even need to release the tightness in her toes. She's been discharged home today! We asked her what she's looking forward to and she said, "I'm so excited to go home. I'm going to be so overwhelmed when I get back!" Please be praying for her, we'll see her again in 8 weeks for a check-up and maybe a small operation.
Mayamiko is having her frame off today! You can bet that she's super excited! She might need a minor release if her toes are tight after the frame comes off, but otherwise she'll just be going straight into a cast. Please be praying for her!
Margret and Mayamiko had some physiotherapy together yesterday with student physiotherapist Shannan, who's come all the way from Australia to volunteer with us here in Malawi! Margret seemed pretty game for anything, but Mayamiko is still a bit hesitant about physiotherapy. Please be praying for her!
Mayamiko seems a bit tired of hospital life. Our Playroom Coordinator, Funny, brought her your get-well messages on Friday and she was a bit shy as always, but really enjoyed hearing from you all! The doctors are continuing to do her turns on her frame, please keep praying for her healing and for patience in the process.
Mayamiko's operation yesterday went well. She's recovering in the ward right now, but will be wheelchair-bound for a bit. The doctors went in and cut the bone. Because she was born with a specific condition which caused her clubfoot, they're a bit more resistant to manipulation than the legs of kids born with normal clubfoot. Please pray for her as they continue doing turns for her frame and as she recovers from this most recent surgery!
Dr. James is giving Mayamiko another surgery tomorrow. Her right foot, the one without the frame, is still in the wrong position, so she will be having surgery tomorrow to correct it. Please be praying for her. She has had so many operations and has been so strong throughout them all, but it's obvious she would like to go home. Hopefully having the operation now, while she needs to remain at the hospital with the frame anyways, will save time, but might make it a bit more difficult in the meanwhile. Thank you for your continued prayers!
Poor Mayamiko was grimacing in pain while she did her physiotherapy exercises today, so out of respect we decided not to photograph her... but when we took a photo of Margret and then turned back around she flashed us a huge smile so we would take her picture! Please be praying for her, physio can be tough but it's really essential to healing!
Our girl is ready for another walk today! Mayamiko came early to the physiotherapy room today before any other kids showed up. She says she woke up so energetic and ready to go! Mayamiko is continuing to train her right leg to walk while the left one still has a frame on it - her grit is so impressive! Thank you for your support and please continue praying for our strong girl Mayamiko!
Mayamiko wanted to watch TV today, she says she wanted to get out of the bed for something fresh and she ended up here! Mayamiko is not complaining of any pain and is continuing her physiotherapy sessions. Please be praying for Mayamiko to get well quickly and be able to use both of her legs properly!
Mayamiko is having her temperature taken to know how she is feeling this afternoon. She will later go for her physiotherapy session. Doctors said she should continue trying to walk using her right leg. We hope by the end of the week Mayamiko will be able to use the leg with full strength. We are asking for your continued prayers for her!
Today, Mayamiko started learning to walk using her right leg after the surgery! She is doing well and is responding accordingly. Mayamiko is so eager to learn new things in order to get better. Her aunt, Blandina, is there giving her full support and by the look on her face it is as if she is the one doing the physiotherapy and not Mayamiko- so awesome! Thank you so much for your endless prayers for Mayamiko and please continue praying for this brave girl.
"It's so sunny today and I feel like laying in bed for a long time," says Mayamiko who is so sleepy. Mayamiko has fibre glass cast on her right leg and during her surgery doctors put a metal rod in it as she is expected to try walking on it. This will help her to walk using crutches while her left leg has a frame. Please join us in praying for Mayamiko to have the courage needed to try and walk using her left leg for the time being while the right one is healing.
It's lunch time and Mayamiko is enjoying her meal. It comprises of nsima (local staple food), green vegetables and meat. She says she has an appetite for the food and has been eagerly waiting for it! Mayamiko had a wound inspection in the morning and she is getting better. Please be praying for her to heal quickly!
Mayamiko visited Margret on her bed for a chat and they seemed to be enjoying their conversation. We are happy that despite the pain caused by the frames, they are able to talk to each other and make each other laugh. Please keep these precious girls in your prayers as they are being treated and getting healed!
Mayamiko is in for another physiotherapy session today. She is being assisted by her aunt Blandina, who is also encouraging her. She is doing well and soon she will be able to do more on the sessions. Thank you for all your prayers for Mayamiko, and we ask to keep on praying for her.
It's the first day of physiotherapy for Mayamiko after her surgery and she is doing great! She is able to respond to the exercises as told by the physiotherapists. She says the pain is not there, only discomfort. Please continue praying for Mayamiko to have the energy for the sessions and for her to be strong.
We thank God for Mayamiko's successful surgery. She is still recovering and the pain has not left her yet. Today, Mayamiko had a wound dressing and we are hopeful that she will be alright within the next days. Thank you for your prayers for her!
It's been a lazy day for Mayamiko, and she has been lying in bed almost all day. She will be going into the theatre tomorrow and the doctors are going to put a frame on her left leg. Please pray for her as she will be undergoing the procedure!
Mayamiko is back at the hospital! She is here for the doctors to review her feet after undergoing a clubfoot operation. Mayamiko has been very quiet today. "I am back here at CURE. My feet are much better and I am able to go school," she said. She is in grade three. We love to see Mayamiko, and we are asking for your continued support in prayers!

Mayamiko came in today for a research project about the outcomes from frames on clubfoot! Unfortunately she's one of the ones who hasn't had as good an outcome, her feet are still tight and it looks as if her clubfoot is reoccurring. Dr. Karolina had us take a video of her walking to show Dr. James when he is back from vacation, and instructed her dad to bring her to their local follow up clinic as she is most likely going to be booked for another operation. When clubfoot is treated in infancy with casting there is a very high, over 90% success rate and low rates of reoccurrence, but for older children like Mayamiko the outcome is usually not as good. We are working to raise awareness in Malawi about how easy it is to treat this condition as long as you get help early! Please be praying for her, as she still has difficulties walking and can't go to school everyday because of it, and will probably need another surgery.
Mayamiko gets to go home today! We're so happy for her! She got a shoe raise from the physio department and now she's headed out! Please continue to pray for her while she recovers at home! We'll see her at a clinic in her area in a couple months to make sure she's healing well!
Mayamiko had her operation yesterday! Her femurs are two different lengths, which is what is causing all the difficulty walking, and her left foot is still slightly clubbed because of the way she limps. The doctors calculated that if they disable her right growth plate in her femur, it will give her left leg a chance to catch up by the time she reaches maturity. She will need a shoe raise while she grows. The doctors drilled through her right growth plate from small holes on either side of her leg. She doesn't look quite as happy as she was before - we think she's still in a bit of pain from the operation, so please be praying she will recover well over the weekend!
Mayamiko and our old pal Charles went in to have their surgeries today! Please be praying for both of these kids as they recover in the ward following their operations! Mayamiko's surgery went well and we'll post more photos and details tomorrow!
Mayamiko is hanging out with her little friend Leah! Both of these beautiful girls are going into surgery tomorrow! Mayamiko is going to have the growth plate in one of her knees arrested so that her other leg can catch up, and Leah is going to have the burn contractures on her fingers released! Big day for both of them, so please keep both of them in your prayers tomorrow!
Mayamiko is back! She is having difficulties walking because of a leg length discrepancy that appears to be separate from her clubfoot - our doctors are going to check out her xrays and see what they can do for her, but it's possible that all she needs is a shoe raise. Stay tuned!
We've been with Mayamiko through a lot, she has spent long periods of time with us in the hospital and we've seen her through frames and casts and multiple surgeries. We have reached a wall at this point though, we can't get ahold of her any more via phone and we haven't seen her in quite a while so we are going to have to shelf her case for now. If we see her again we will definitely let you know how she is. Thanks for helping Mayamiko!
Mayamiko's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 06/25/2012 - Mayamiko was here and was checked out and received some exercises to do to help her, she has been through a lot with CURE but she's making progress and we'll see her again soon!
Mayamiko's treatment date has been changed to 05/22/2012 - Mayamiko is back and is about to have, hopefully her last surgery!
Mayamiko's treatment date has been changed to 05/29/2012 - She got into the operating room and they realized she had a fever and a cough so they had to call it off for today. They'll try again next week.
Mayamiko has arrived at CURE Malawi
Mayamiko's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 04/16/2012 - Mayamiko was sent home for a while, finally! She has her cast on now and it will be on for 4 weeks and then she will be readmitted for some last minute things. Keep praying for her!
She got her frames off last week!
She's really in it for the long haul! Mayamiko is still here with those frames on her legs and a smile on her face!
Congratulations! Mayamiko's funding goal is met!
Mayamiko is still here and it looks like she will be for a while. She's definitely not leaving until those frames come off and who knows when that will be. She's still in great spirits though!
