"My wife delivered our twins on the way to the hospital." Oniepu's father narrates.

Oniepu is a two year old baby boy. Both he and his twin brother were born on the way to hospital. The hospital was far away. Quick thinking and action on Oniepu's father sorted that out. He called a well known midwife and she assisted his wife to deliver and to their surprise, the twins came out holding each others hands! This joy was short lived with the immediate realization that one of twins (Oniepu) had a cleft lip and palate condition!

Having had experience with a number of home deliveries, the midwife advised them to proceed to the hospital and look for a surgeon for more assistance regarding the very specific condition. On arriving at the hospital, they were told about CURE Children's Hospital of Kenya and our partner in cleft lip and palate surgeries, Smile Train. Oniepu was accompanied by his father to CURE and has been scheduled for a cleft lip repair first then the palate repair later.

Oniepu and his father were discharged to go home and continue their recovery after ticking all the boxes green in a day of recovery here at CURE. Their next review will be in 20 days which is the recommended period for a first time cleft lip procedure. We bid them goodbye at the bus terminus as they prepared to travel back home. We thank you for your support and prayer during their time at CURE! We are looking forward to seeing them back again in a few weeks! Photo of Oniepu

In the OR, our doctor made an incision along the edges of Oniepu's cleft lip extending up into the nose. The doctor later used stitches to bring the cut edges together to shape Oniepu's new upper lip and nostril. Let's thank God for Oniepu's successful cleft lip repair procedure and also continue to keep supporting him and his dad as he recovers in the ward! Photo of Oniepu

"Oniepu's twin is fine but Oniepu has not been breastfeeding well. His mother has resorted to giving him goat milk as an alternative." Oniepu's father shares with us. Feeding problems are common with children who have a cleft lip. We are just glad Oniepu has found CURE Children's Hospital of Kenya and will have his cleft lip repaired! Join us in supporting Oniepu and his father during their time here at CURE! Photo of Oniepu
