In Petro’s family, there are many mouths to feed - he is the seventh child in a family of ten. When Petro was two years old, his mother nursed him to sleep and left him by the fireplace. While his mom was out in the garden, Petro woke up and wriggled himself out of the shawl he was wrapped up in, and stumbled into the fireplace. As he tried to leave the fireplace, his baby hoodie caught fire! Thankfully, he made it out of the fireplace and was met by a dashing and scared mother.
However, the damage was already done. Half of Petro's frontal body was burned. Petro was taken to the hospital and his burns were dressed and cleaned. For two years, they dressed his burns until he was able to be functional again.
Petro started school very late, and now he's fifteen years old in sixth grade. He doesn't recount the ordeal vividly, but his parents do! Through our partnership with the local church, he was brought to CURE to have his burn contractures released on his neck and chin.

Serial splinting involves dressing the wound and putting a fresh splint. Petro has been given the second splint out of a three-splint regimen that will keep his neck in place so that the stitches can remain in as the wound heals. Petro will continue his recovery at home once he's received his third and final splint. Thank you for your prayers!
Petro's neck splint has been removed, and now, he can sit up! He says he misses the sun especially with the cold and rainy weather here in Kijabe. He comes from one of the hottest parts of the country. He has been reminiscing on the times he would have gone out and enjoyed the sun's rays. We praise God for Petro's progress. Please keep him in your prayers for a successful recovery.
Petro's burn contracture was treated with serial splinting, release of contracting bands with Z-plasties (a technique that is used to improve the functional and cosmetic appearance of scars.), and skin grafting in the neck area. Petro was glad to be out of the operating room! He was taught to blink twice for 'YES' and once for 'NO' to avoid rapid neck movement during recovery. We praise the Lord for Petro's successful surgery! Let's continue to pray for a smooth recovery as he rests on his bed in the ward.
James, our operating room nurse, prayed for Petro and his father just before the surgery began. Michael, Petro's dad, was really eager to give the green light on his son's procedure and eagerly waited for Petro as he was in surgery. Please remember Petro and his dad in prayer, as they wait patiently for results from this life-changing procedure.
Petro is a top performer who is always at the top of his class. He hopes to have more time in school, but due to the burn contracture on his neck and chin, he misses school often. We hope that after surgery, he will be able to spend more time in school! Please join us in welcoming Petro to CURE Kenya!
