Ruth is a seven-year-old girl who was born normal according to her mum Dorcas. When Ruth turned one, she fell ill. Dorcas actually thought she was going to die. Ruth was rushed to a hospital, which was almost three hours away from their home, via matatu (bus). When they got to the hospital, an unknown diagnosis was made and Ruth was given an injection, as well as some other medication. A few hours later, her leg started swelling around the site of the injection. Dorcas was worried. She left the hospital because she felt that the situation was getting worse there.
When they got home, Dorcas boiled some water to suppress the swelling. She also applied some cream to help further reduce the swelling, which did eventually go away. Although, Ruth still complained about pain around the area. When Ruth turned two, her right leg started curving in an abnormal way, and her left leg soon began to curve as well.
Dorcas took her daughter back to the hospital to find out what was going on. It was so hard for the doctors to determine how and why this had happened. Dorcas and Ruth ended up going back home disappointed that nothing could be done, and Ruth would remain disabled. This was their new reality. Dorcas gave up on seeking medical intervention for several years. Until 2020, when Ruth was six years old, Dorcas learned about one of our CURE Kenya mobile clinics near their town and she decided to give us a try.
They were told that Ruth will need surgery to correct her bent legs. Since this is Dorcas’ last resort, she isn’t holding back. She hopes that her daughter will go back to being normal just like other kids her age, grow normally, and have a good future! Please pray for physical healing, spiritual cleansing, and emotional rejuvenation for both this mother and daughter!
“Right now she is better than last night. I think she was uncomfortable at night which made her cry,” Dorcas told us. Ruth didn’t sleep very well through the night. She kept waking up and crying. Our nurses on duty gave her pain killers and tried to change her sleeping position. This helped her a bit. Ruth is much better today, and we hope that after she is able to eat, she can sleep and rest.
When Ruth woke up, she was shocked to discover that she couldn’t lift up her legs or move them. This is because she has splints on to allow for healing to happen properly, and the doctors can assess how her wounds are doing. Before she leaves, complete casts will be applied to protect her little legs.
Ruth went to the operating room yesterday afternoon to have both her feet operated on. The procedure involved removing pieces of her bone that were causing the curves and placing them correctly to make her legs straight. The surgery went well, and we are thank full to God. Please pray for Ruth’s recovery process.
We were outside filming something with Ruth when Peter, a guard at CURE Kenya, came over to try and find out what we were up to. Ruth had her mum’s phone in her hands, and she was enjoying listening to some music on it. Peter came and showed her his tablet and asked her, “See, mine is bigger! Do you want mine?” Ruth just smiled and looked at the tablet. We are happy that Ruth’s presence at CURE means God is going to do something in her life that will change how the future looks for her.
Ruth is cute and just a bit shy. She is also curious and loves to learn new things. She is here at CURE Kenya with her mum as they wait for Ruth's surgery. Ruth is set to have an operation to help straighten her legs. We are not sure yet if she will have both legs done at once or one at a time. Please pray for the procedure she is set to have!
