Sammywise's Story

“I was hearing about CURE in all the hospitals I went to, but until a cousin of mine referred me to CURE, that's when I decided to come here” Sammywise's mother Dorcas tells us.

Sammywise is a 16 year old boy who LOVES the game of football (soccer). In June of this year, he had an unfortunate football accident. He got badly tackled and ended up dislocating his hip. Being a teenager and desiring to tough it out, he didn't inform his parents of the accident and his pain until it got worse. Dorcas noticed Sammywise wasn't going to play as usual and he was limping. Concerned, she took him to a number of hospitals and surprisingly, in all of them, CURE was being mentioned! "It was my cousin who finally convinced us to come to here" Dorcas said.

Sammywise likes helping at home with chores and playing with his friends, but his ability to do both has been dimmed due to the ever present pain in his hip. Thankfully, Sammywise is here at CURE Kenya now and our surgeons will get his hip sorted out and get Sammywise back out on the football field!

Remember the Z-A in 10 sec challenge we gave Sam yesterday? Well today he nailed it in 8 seconds!! You can see the video here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=465668831061021 We bumped into Sam as he was just coming from the bathroom just before lunch time. His hip joint is healing well but he is still taking things slow. "I don't want to push my hip too far so I'll continue using this walking aids at home until it's safe." Sam shared with us. We thank you for this far in Sam's healing journey as he continues at home.

After his bed rest, Sam took a few steps around the ward per the recommendation from the physical therapists. This is helping him to be able to sit and stand more seamlessly as his body is healing. Sam was here checking out his phone. We stroke a challenge for him to master when we see him again; that he should say the alphabet backwards (from Z-A) in 10 seconds! He accepted! We hope to see how he will have fared tomorrow. Photo of Sammywise

Sam was taken into the Radiology Department for an x-ray of his hip today. Sam was as assertive as usual and was asking questions about the anesthesia, x-ray equipment and possible advise for a career in medical practice. What a man! Let's continue to pray for a quick recovery for Sam's hip as he recuperates in the ward. Photo of Sammywise

The surgeon and the OR team were preparing the pins and screws for Sammywise's hip procedure. The procedure fully corrected the abnormalities of Sam's bone and the soft tissues about his hip joint. In the end, before closing the incision, they used the screws and pins to hold everything in place to maintain stability during healing. Please pray for Sam as he begins his healing process.  Photo of Sammywise

Sammywise is a very intelligent young man. "He has taken all the science subjects in high school and he's always learning," his mother Dorcas shared with us. You can see him on his mom's phone in this photo and it turns out he was researching his own condition as he was mentally preparing for his upcoming surgery! We ask you to join us in prayer and support for Sammywise and Dorcas during their time here at CURE Kenya! Photo of Sammywise
