Coming from a family of six children, growing up can be quite hectic. Gabriel's condition was neglected on its onset days. Thomas, the big brother was the one who noticed the feet of Gabriel curving inside since they were quite close back then when Gabriel was just 4 years old. A few weeks later, they visited their local hospital and a glimmer of hope shone in their lives.
At the local hospital, Gabriel was introduced to physiotherapy and constant casting on his right foot..... for the next 10 years. The right foot eventually got straightened but this still didn't satisfy Gabriel's mother and the rest of the family. "Were we going to wait for another 10 years again? No" Thomas told us. At the next appointment, with which the left leg's physiotherapy was to start, a new doctor(who knew about CURE Kenya), saw the condition and advised the family to go to CURE in Kijabe for more specialized corrective surgery that would take few months to be healed! This really pleased Gabriel's family. They were in the dark for a very long time! Truly, God's time is indeed the best.
There is nothing quite like family. The relatives have been supporting Gabriel in all avenues. From introducing him to ball games such as volley ball and educational material just to help Gabriel not to feel neglected or sidelined because of his condition. Gabriel isn't much of a talker but a very simple and straight forward young man. He'll definitely warm up to you with the right words.
Now, Gabriel and his loving brother are at CURE waiting for the surgery scheduled for tomorrow.
Gabriel's surgery was a success! Nurse David did his best to cheer Gabriel up as he escorted Gabriel to his bed, but Gabriel wasn't having any of it. It's normal to feel a little weird since all the anesthesia meds are still slowly leaving the system. Since Gabriel's procedure wasn't complicated, he will just need a few physical therapy sessions to learn how to use his crutches and then he should be outta here! We thank God for this progress!
Anesthetist John prayed over strength for Gabriel and his brother Thomas while waiting for Gabriel's procedure. John also prayed for a smooth and successful surgery and for his left foot will be corrected so that he can continue to achieve his dreams.
Gabriel does well in school! He loves mathematics and social sciences, and hopes to be a doctor or a professor when he grows up. Going to school hasn't been easy especially since it's quite a distance from their home, but Thomas has been his guardian as he helps Gabriel whenever he can. We caught up with them as they had a heart to heart discussion before the big day tomorrow. Kindly join us in prayer and support as Gabriel's transformation begins at CURE Kenya.
