Miten is a friendly young girl! She came to CURE Ethiopia with her sister Webareg, seeking help for her clubfoot problem. She was born with the right side of her foot bent inward, and this is her first time visiting a hospital. Her family heard about CURE from a previous patient of ours and brought Miten to us!
Miten loves school and she is a fifth grader, but children in her school and village make fun of her foot and call her names. “I always cry when they say mean things to me and most of the time I avoid playing with my friends so that they won’t make fun of me,” Miten shared. Bullying is not the only problem Miten has, she also got tired after walking long distances and sometimes it is even painful for her to walk. Thankfully she is at CURE to start her healing journey and to leave all the pain and suffering behind. Thank you for your support in her journey!
After being in the hospital for almost five months, it is time for Miten to go back home! She was so happy to hear the news, and she is glad that she will see her parents and siblings soon. Before leaving, she received a CURE care kit. She will continue her healing from home, and we will see her again in a few weeks when she returns for her check-up!
Miten had another trip to the operating room today. The doctors manipulated her foot and ankle and put on a new cast. She is doing great and back in the ward resting and continuing her recovery. Please keep on praying for her as she recovers!
"I had a little pain last night. The nurses gave me medication, and I'm feeling much better ever since," Miten explained. Now, she is out of bed and wheeling around the ward while she continues to heal. Thank you for your prayers for her healing!
Miten's operation was a success! The doctors did two procedures: one to lengthen a tendon and the other to straighten her foot. A cast was put on to keep her foot in the corrected position, and now, she is back in the ward resting. Please keep her in your prayers for a speedy recovery!
Great news! The day Miten has been waiting for is here, her surgery day. The casting treatment did its job perfectly, and today, she is going to the operation room to straighten her foot. Please keep her in your prayers for a speedy recovery!
"I'm happy that everyone is thinking of me and sending me messages," says Miten. She enjoyed hearing the messages and read a little herself as well! She also shared, "I wish everyone a good day, and God be with you all - and I love you." Thank you for making her special!
We found Miten playing the parachute game with everyone in our long term patient ward. The parachute game is where a ball moves up and down on the parachute until it falls on the participant and that participant has to introduce themselves to the group. This week, Miten also had a cast change and her foot is showing progress!
This was planned to be Miten's last casting. Unfortunately, her foot still needs a couple more. Today, she got another cast so that her foot could be straight and ready for an operation. Miten will continue to stay in our long term patient ward and continue with her casting treatment.
All the crafts Miten had been helping out with were put up and we celebrated Ethiopian Christmas! The CURE Ethiopia staff pooled their money to buy each kid a little Christmas present. Here you can see Executive Director Adey checking out the shirt Miten received!
Lots has been happening for Miten this week! Unlike many other countries, Ethiopia celebrates Christmas on January 7th so during our craft times, we've been making paper decorations! The long term patient ward is looking incredible festive thanks to her hard work. Also, Miten receive what will hopefully be her LAST cast change today! Please be praying the doctor agrees and it is soon time for surgery!
This week Miten and counselor Temesgen's conversations about math turned into some actual practice! They were practicing their addition and subtraction today. It's been a hard year first with Ethiopian schools closing because of the pandemic and being stuck in the hospital as the schools are now opening again. Regardless, Miten is determined not to fall behind!
This morning we found Miten talking to one of our counselors, Temesgen. They were talking about school and doing a little mathematics. "I want to work hard in school so that I can be a doctor someday" Miten told Temesgen. This is a new development as just a couple of weeks back, she was not sure on what she wanted to do in her future!
Miten had another casting today and her foot is responding well to the casting treatment! She still has a couple of more casts to go but she is enjoying her stay in the ward and having fun with her friends!
Miten is doing well and continuing her healing! She is have a new cast every two weeks and each one bends her foot just a little straighter, preparing her for her upcoming surgery. Her foot is showing great progress! Today we found her with one of our nurses Melat who was braiding Miten's hair. Please continue praying for Miten as she continues her healing!
Miten had her first cast change today and she did a wonderful job! She still has a couple of more castings to go but her foot is making good progress. She will have another cast in two weeks. Each cast slowly bends her foot a littler straighter. Until her next casting, she will continue hanging out in the ward having fun with her new friends!
Today we found Miten singing a song and having fun with our counselor Nahom and her friends! She will have her second casting in a couple of days while she continues her healing and making friends in the ward!
Miten was hanging outside and enjoying her morning. She is doing great and starting to get used to her new long leg cast. She is also learning to walk with crutches and she is doing a great job. Continue praying for her as she continues her healing!
Miten started serial casting today! The physiotherapist put on a long leg cast which covers the whole part of her leg and it will help her straighten it. She will have another casting in two weeks, until then, she will stay in the ward having fun and making friends as she continues her healing!
Miten is taking everything step by step. The first step is she will have a serial casting, which means she will have casting for a couple of weeks to straighten her foot. And after that, the second step will be an operation. Please keep this young girl in your prayers as she starts her healing journey!
