CURE in Ethiopia

The picture above is of CURE in Ethiopia. Everyone who serves with CURE in Ethiopia, from medical professionals to office staff, are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical and spiritual care to people who, without CURE, couldn't find it and couldn't afford it, just like Mikias. To do that, we're inviting you to partner with us.

We need to raise approximately $1000 to treat children like Mikias. When you give a gift through Mikias's CUREkids profile, your contribution will help us continue our work in countries like Ethiopia. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. You can choose to follow their updates and send them get well messages. That means that each year, you're a part of helping 12 different children, beginning with Mikias. We call it being a CURE Hero!

Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

“I love planes and I want to be a pilot someday!” Mikias tells us with a hint of excitement in his voice.

Mikias is a seventh grader who enjoys playing soccer. He came to CURE Ethiopia with his father Taye seeking help for his feet. Mikias has a birth deformity called cleft feet where his feet are partially split in half. His condition can make walking painful and wearing shoes impossible. Shoes would not only add protection for Mikias' feet while walking, but Mikias wants to wear them to help hide his feet. Mikias is self conscious about the way his feet look and has suffered discrimination and judgement because of his condition almost everywhere he has gone.

Mikias' family had initially sought help from a local hospital, but were turned away. It wasn't until recently that a family friend found out about CURE Ethiopia and recommended Mikias try coming here. While Mikias will never have "normal" feet, our surgeons will be able to minimize his clefts, making it easier to walk, alleviating Mikias' pain, and allowing him to finally wear shoes! Please join us in welcoming Mikias as he starts his healing journey!

After a brief rest, Mikias had his second surgery today! This time the operation was on his left foot. Similar to the first time around, Dr. Tesfaye removed another little bone Mikias had around his second toe. Once this heals, Mikias will have a third surgery to release the first and second toes which are stuck together. But for now, this surgery went well and Mikias is back in the ward once again! Mikias did great in the OR! As planned, he had surgery on his right foot. Dr. Tesfaye removed an extra bone in Mikias's foot that had been spreading his foot into the two separate halves. With this bone gone, Dr. Tesfaye was able to bring the two halves of Mikias' foot closer together and reduce the cleft. Now, after Mikias heals from this surgery, wearing shoes will be possible and walking won't be near as painful! He is back in the ward resting. Please keep on praying for him. Photo of Mikias
