Little MIchael is a playful young man who is the only child to his mother Mastewal. As such, he's the pride and joy of his family and his parents want to provide the best for him in life. Unfortunately, their lives changed seven months ago when Michael was playing and accidentally grabbed an electric wire. He electrocuted his finger, burning it badly. Mastewal rushed Michael to their local medical clinic where they were able to help relieve his pain. What they weren't equipped to do was set Michael's finger up to heal properly. As such, as Michael's finger did heal, but in a way where the inside of his finger melted together on either side of his knuckle. This now prevents Michael from ever straightening his middle finger on his left hand.

Mastewal has been searching for a place to restore her son's hand for months now, but she is always turned away - either because they are not equipped to help or she cannot afford the price tag. Thankfully, she ran into a previous patient of ours here at CURE Ethiopia who shared with her the news about what we do and how we do it. Daring to hope and with nothing to lose, Mastewal and Michael showed up at our door only to have their courage rewarded by finding out we can indeed correct Michael's finger! Michael has been admitted to our ward and will soon receive the surgery he needs to get his life back on track!

Right on schedule, Michael came back for his follow up! Dr. Tesfaye had Michael hold a few things and use his fingers in different ways and he is doing great! He will continue his physical therapy exercises from home and we will see him again in three months when he returns for another check-up! Photo of Michael

Little Michael came back for another check-up and we were amazed! He is using his finger just like all his other fingers! This little guy is doing wonderful and Dr. Tesfaye told Michael and his mom Mastewal to come back and check in with us in another month. We will see them then! Photo of Michael

Before seeing Dr. Tesfaye, Michael spent some time running around and playing. His finger is healing well and he doesn't need to wear the splint he got last week all the time anymore. From now on, he only has to wear it at night. During the day, he'll practice using it just like all his other fingers! We will see the progress he is making when he returns for his next check-up! Lil Michael came back for his check-up today. He's doing great and his finger is nice and straight!. Since the wound from his surgery has healed, he got a splint to help him make sure his finger stays straight and doesn't start bending again. After such a long time in the forced, bent position, his finger isn't used to being straight and kind of wants to return to that position. We have to fight diligently against that! We will see Michael again next week when he returns for another check-up! Photo of Michael

The doctors kept Michael overnight for observation and, this morning, they discharged him! He's doing great although a little confused about the big bandage on his right hand. Please be praying for him until we see him again for a follow up next week! Photo of Michael

Michael's surgery went wonderful and just as planned! After releasing the contracture on the Michael's middle finger, Dr. Tesfaye temporarily put in a pin to keep Michael's finger straight as it heals (it will be removed once he's done healing). After seven months of being bent, Michael's finger will want to return to the bent position, but the pin will make sure this doesn't happen! Michael is resting and recovering well in the ward. Michael is a little nervous being in this new hospital environment, but we're doing our best to welcome him and reassure him. His mom Mastewal knows this surgery is what he needs to give him a better future. Please join us in welcoming this pair as they get ready for surgery! Photo of Michael
