"She used to be in school but after going there for some time, she told me that children in her school were making fun of her hand problem, and she doesn’t want to continue like that," Fentaw, Mekiya’s father shared with us. “I tried talking to the teachers but that didn’t help, so she quit her school a year ago."
Mekiya is a friendly girl. She comes to CURE Ethiopia seeking help for her hand problem. Four years ago, she was in the house playing with her siblings. While playing, she accidentally fell on hot coals and hurt her hand. At the time, the family took her to a traditional healer, but her hand did not heal properly, and she still needed treatment for her right wrist and fingers. “I did not stop. I have been asking around but could (not) find a place that would help me heal my daughter,” Fentaw told us. “But recently, I met a woman in our village who has a child with a similar problem as mine, and she is the one who told me about the CURE hospital." Mekiya was in the second grade but isn't currently going to school due to her circumstances. She told us she is looking forward to being healed and going back to school! Her parents are farmers and she has two sisters and two brothers. Join us in welcoming Mekiya as she starts her healing journey!
Mekiya came back for another check-up today, rocking her big blue hood since it's pretty cold out. She saw the doctor and got a fresh cast put on. The doctors say the wound from her operation is healing well and overall, she is showing a good progress! She will continue her healing from home and we will see her again next week when she returns for another check-up!
