“I have never gone to school. If I got healed and have a straight leg, I want to walk to school like my siblings and friends!” Birtukan shared with us.

Birtukan comes from a big family and she is the youngest of seven, she has five brothers and one sister. She came with her mother, Mulunesh, to CURE Ethiopia seeking treatment for her burn contracture. Her mother Mulunesh explained to us how Birtukan got hurt, “She was around three when it happened. I went out to fetch water and her father was a bit far from our house doing farm work and the other children were not in the house either. She fell on a fire and her father heard her but when he got to the house, her left leg and some part of her abdomen were burnt.” She continued, “We took her to a hospital right away and her abdomen is healed now but we could not afford to follow-up for her leg treatment.” Birtukan's left knee and ankle have been disabled by contractures ever since the accident. To get around to places she used to jump with one of her legs, but when she got older she could not do that as easily so now she crawls. Birtukan told us that the children in her neighborhood are all supportive and she plays with them too. Birtukan shared that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up! Join us welcoming this family as they start their journey of healing!
