CURE Zambia and Surgicorps Internataional Complete 100+ Surgeries in Week-Long Partnership
Surgicorps and Beit-CURE Zambia team up to give Alimwi the best care
Recently, the Beit-CURE Hospital in Zambia hosted four surgeons and over a dozen support staff from Surgicorps International for one week to provide 109 life-changing plastic and reconstructive surgeries for pediatric patients. The entire country of Zambia only has two permanent plastic surgeons to serve the population of 18+ million, meaning the hospital’s three operating rooms were busy all week long.
The strong and strategic partnership between CURE International and Surgicorps International has been transformational for countless children since the partnership began over a decade ago.
“It is always an honor to host the extraordinarily talented teams that Surgicorps assemble for service at our facility,” said Dr. Giorgio Lastroni, Medical Director of Beit-CURE Zambia. “I am very proud that our partnership has been able to provide such essential care for so many over the years. It’s a testament to what we can do when we all work together for good.”
Surgicorps volunteers team up with Beit-CURE Zambia staff for one week a year (last year’s trip was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Due to massive demand for plastic and reconstructive surgeries, two week-long visits are currently being planned in 2022 for April and September.
“We’ve traveled throughout the world for the past 27 years, providing healthcare for those in need. Our ten trips to the Beit CURE Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia have been exceptional. We’ve been warmly welcomed and our teams have worked extremely well in concert with the CURE staff. We’re proud and honored to partner with an organization such as CURE, their daily work for the people of Africa and the Philippines is exemplary!” said Dr. Jack Demos
The Beit-CURE Hospital in Zambia regularly provides free orthopedics, ENT, and audiology care for children suffering with treatable disabilities. Zambian children who require plastic and reconstructive surgeries are able to schedule examinations and surgeries for future Surgicorps visits. Each week-long visit allows 200-350 patients to be seen and 100-150 surgeries to be conducted.
Surgicorps teams consist of about 20 individuals, including surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, occupational therapists, and non-medical support workers. The permanent Beit-CURE Zambia staff work closely with the visiting team during the week of examinations and surgeries in order to provide follow-up care for patients.
This last visit proved to be another great success. CURE International looks forward to continuing its impactful partnership with Surgicorps to provide life-changing surgeries for children for many years to come.
