Uganda Runs for Brain Surgery

In October 2020, the CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda hosted its 4th annual Brain Surgery Run and raised $100 million Shillings ($26,936). This event gave the Ugandan community an interactive way to help local children with life-threatening neurological conditions receive treatment by raising funds for the CURE Uganda children’s hospital.

CURE Uganda is a specialty teaching hospital that treats the neurosurgical needs of children. The hospital opened in January 2001 and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this January. Over that time, the CURE Uganda children’s hospital performed 20,000 life-saving brain surgeries. 

“Can you imagine what it takes to do 20,000 complex brain surgeries? Miracles are happening every day at CURE children’s hospital,” said First Lady of Uganda Janet Kainembabazi Museveni.

First Lady Janet Museveni participated in this year’s Brain Run and showed her support during a recent Uganda press conference. “CURE Uganda relies on the goodwill and generosity of donors to accomplish miracles every day. I appeal to you today to join us in this noble cause to provide brain surgery for the nation’s most vulnerable children in need. Join us in providing miracles for these precious children,” First Lady Janet Museveni proclaimed. 

Due to the COVID pandemic, the run was postponed from April and became a virtual run held at the end of October. People participated by purchasing a Brain Run T-shirt, running in their local area, and sharing the picture and videos of their run to encourage others, generate awareness, and show support. 

This year, over 1,100 people wore the Brain Run T-shirt, slipped on their running shoes, and raised money to provide surgeries for children with life-threatening neurological conditions such as hydrocephalus, spina bifida, brain tumors, and epilepsy. These conditions are common for children around the world and are life-threatening, and CURE Uganda has been treating these conditions successfully for 20 years.
